Default Map of Calgary Now vs 1924

http://maps.calgary.ca/calgary1924/

I found this really cool. Not sure if it's been posted before but a quick search didn't reveal anything.

It's amazing how much the river and Prince's Island Park has changed.

My house used to be the biggest one on the block. Now... not so much!

You can go as far south as early Midnapore.

Development pattern was really sporadic on the outskirts at the time. You can tell there was a lot of land speculation in the 1910s that went bust.

I don't like that format... why not have the present and 1924 split and shown mirrored?

Surprised that it stretched all the way to Mcknight in the north but only to about cemetery hill in the south.

I've lived in two houses that were around then.

As a Southwester, it's so weird to see the city without the Reservoir. Must have been sweet living on the huge farm/estate where Oakridge is now.

It's neat seeing some of the old dirt roads in the southern ranch areas that actually run consistent with the major road networks of today (Crowchild, Glenmore, Mcleod, et.)

When will they release the street view version?

Very cool.

Anyone notice what looks like rows and rows of something in some of the southern communities...just east of the reservoir/Heritage Park area to about present day Blackfoot/Deerfoot?

What is that, hay bales..lol?

I've been looking at this all day I find it fascinating it's too bad they couldn't mirror the location between the two years but really neat anyways.

You can see the newly constructed Imperial Oil Refinery down where Lynnview ridge is. The tank farm is right where those houses were condemned 75 years later.

It's weird to see things on there that you never imagined would have been around almost a century ago. I grew up in Braeside, which is just open farmland in that picture, but there are a couple of thickets of trees that we used to play in as kids that were there in 1924.

One is about a block west of the Elementary School. More than once when I was growing up, it got quite severely burned by a stupid kid playing with matches or something.

The other one is right beside what is now the corner of 14th St and Anderson road. This one is much larger than the one by the school, but it was harder to get to because of how the yards are positioned there.

I never imagined that those were so old. If they were standing in the middle of the bald-ass prairie 92 years ago, who knows how long they've been there.

Calgary Golf and Country looked a little different back then

In the clubhouse there's pics from that era of the club under construction adding irrigation and some hole redesign.

Also check out the Elks club, some holes were way south along 16th ave and way east to 6th street.

I would guess the King Eddy was a popular hotel back then!

Very cool.
