Default Canoe shopping

I’ve been thinking about getting a canoe in the Spring and was wondering what sort of things I should be looking for? I will likely be getting it used since there always seems to be a number of them on Kijiji here in the Halifax area. It will be used on lakes and ideally it should fit 2 people (plus a bit of gear) or 3 people and not be too heavy. My parents had one when I was growing up and the thing was extremely heavy so I’d like to avoid that. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd consider a Grumman, but they are heavy.

Spoiler!

EDIT: In all seriousness...

http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/canoe.html

I don't remember where I heard it, but I remember someone saying years ago fibre glass was the only way to go. I don't think this still holds true based on the REI link above, as materials have made huge strides in the last few years.

Also, is there any way to get to try out a canoe before purchasing? Maybe even learn how to maneuver the canoe from your car to lake and vice versa from the seller?

A canoe primarliy used on lakes should have a flat bottom. The longer the canoe is the more it will weigh. A 15 footer might be a good place to start looking.

When we got ours we bought a rooftop kit "just to get it home." It was 4 foam blocks that clip into the top edge of the canoe then it rested on the roof of your car.
I have to say, they were way better than a roof rack. Once you snugged the canoe down with adjustable straps it wasn't going anywhere.
