Controversial MLA Deborah Drever calls identical holiday message an ‘unfortunate error’

By Alyssa Julie News Producer Global News

CALGARY – Deborah Drever has started the new year by explaining an awkward holiday message to her constituents.

The independent MLA for Calgary-Bow has come under fire on social media for a holiday message that appeared to be identical to a letter posted in NDP MLA Brandy Payne’s community newsletter.

The message reads, in part:

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and had a chance to spend time with friends, family and loved ones.

Recently, our government announced Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan. The plan, based on the advice of the energy industry, experts and real Albertans, puts a price on carbon, phases out coal pollution, and limits pollution from the oil sands.

Lori Williams, a political analyst with Mount Royal University, said the publishing gaffe is embarrassing, but not particularly surprising.

“She was ejected from the NDP caucus because of inappropriate behaviour, but she has voted with the NDP and still communicates with NDP members.”

This is the MLA that was elected as an NDP candidate and then got booted from the NDP for her indiscretions. One of the better things she has done is propose the bill giving victims of domestic violence the right to get out leases. There was speculation at that time that the NDP helped her with the bill to build up her reputation in order to make it more palatable to bring her back into the NDP fold.

This is hardly news

In the quote of the link you posted, you left out what I deem to be a very important part - she is claiming she actually wrote her own letter and the publishing company which issued the letter created the mix-up and issued the other MLA letter instead of hers. Until that is debunked, this isn't news. It is click bait, even with her history.

Not by itself. The implication is that after Drever's quite serious transgressions, NDP distanced itself from her only "for the show". In reality, she's still being closely coached by NDP damage control people to get her image cleaned up enough to take her back.

The publisher of the newsletter has apologized for the mixup. Drever and her team had nothing to do with it.

The. Only news here is that people actually read holiday messages from their MLA's.

The poor sport PC and Wildrose supporters are really reaching here. This is hardly an example of a bad government.

Careful, the PC's to my knowledge they haven't said squat. Implicating them is just as bad as Taco leaving out key portions of the original news story in his/her quote in the OP.

The Wildrose on the other-hand, have decided to use this as ammo, so that seems fair.

The MLA was proven not to have done anything at all. She has proven, by every single account, to be doing a very good job as MLA. Can't she, at some point, be forgiven for mistakes in her youth? Pretty classless of you.
