I don't know about everyone else, but learning homonyms was something that was taught to me in grade two or three. Recently, I'm seeing people make mistakes with seemingly simple words far too frequently. Now I realize nobody is infallible, and I sometimes will type something quickly and not realize I've made an error until after I hit the Post button, but lately the amount of errors (and often multiple times in the same post!) has gotten ridiculous.
So here's how to use these words properly. Learn this now to avoid embarrassing yourself in the future.
'There' specifies a place, as in, "Kipper is looking pretty solid out there."
'Their' is a possessive, as in, " Their skaters are good, but their goaltending is weak."
'They're' is a contraction of 'they are', as in, "With the additions the Flames made this Summer, they're a better team now."

Why is their such animosity when it is clear that they're was no malicicious intent other than the thread originator wanting to extol there grandiose academia? Please pass off Mr./Mrs. Homonym...thank you.

"your" is another good one.
As Ross on Friends once said:
"Y-O-U apostrophe R-E means you are. Y-O-U-R means your."

(nice job).

Tsk tsk, you should have used "their".
There is an off-topic board, MarchHare should have used that board to prove what a wizard he was in grade two.

Actually I facetiously used all 3 "homonyms" in the wrong way.

Homonyms are a bad one for me I admit. Always has been always will be - its just how my noodle works. I will try to pay more attention to it but frankly I'd rather people spend time on the actual content of their post rather than their grammar. Grammar is secondary in my view to someone putting thought into what point they are making. My two cents.

Nope, I'm in broadcasting actually. I'd rather be on a street corner today though, it's nice out and it sure would be better then an office.

Please. If showing off was my intention, I would have picked a better skill to highlight than elementary school spelling.

Strong Bad had a good song about that too. "Y-O-U-R. Y-O-U-apostrophe-R-E. They're as different as night and day. Don't you think that night and day are different? What's wrong with you?"

Oh, I agree entirely. Content trumps spelling any day. That being said, it is distracting (at least for me...perhaps I'm alone in this?) when an otherwise intelligently-written post is littered with easily-correctable spelling and grammatical errors.

Run-on sentence. Punctuation errors.

You've admitted you're young enough not to remember Lanny in the late 80's so I'm guessing you're not exactly in a career type position yourself.
Do try and contribute something meaningful around here.
