Team Canada - First 18 members named - No Flames
http://www.tsn.ca/canada-names-18-pl...nship-1.469873
Team Canada released their first 18 members for the upcoming world championship in Russia. No Flames.
Defense and goaltending look average at best. Discuss.

Monahan - Wants to heal injuries
Hamilton - Wants to train and work toward the next NHL season instead
Giordano - "Undecided" but wants to spend time with his family
Brodie - I never saw a reason given, got invited and declined
Don't think anyone else was invited
On that note, for other countries:
Backlund - Confirmed will be playing for Sweden
Frolik - No go for the Czechs because of his injury
Gaudreau - Undecided, worried about having to pay for his own insurance, plus he's going back to collage for the summer
Jokipakka - Declined invite due to nagging hip injury
So far, looks like the only guy going is Backlund

Gaudreau - Undecided, worried about having to pay for his own insurance
WTF? Is cashseriously an issue? That sounds like a pretty weak excuse.

Brodie doesn't feel 100% and wants to spend time to rest up and be prepared for next season as he feels that is more imporant

Good, I'm glad the Flames players are focusing on their club team instead of a B level international tournament.

Not sure, probably an excuse, but you see it used by lots of RFA's every year

Gaudreau has a big pay day coming, guaranteed money. No reason to risk that by injuring himself in a 2nd rate tournament.

Probably agent's advice. Think about it.
If you don't have a contract and have a career-altering injury at the World Championships...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess it's not shocking considering World Cup is also this summer but this is a far, far cry from last year's World Championship team and pretty bad even for an average World Championship team. That defense isn't going to be winning Canada anything. None of them are particularly bad per se but for Team Canada? Ben Hutton? Chris Tanev? Blech.

I'm not really familiar with the costs of insurance policies, but I'm guessing he'd have some pretty hefty premiums if he's looking to cover what's pretty much a guaranteed $50-$60 million dollar contract that hasn't been signed yet.

I could see the insurance being pretty pricey. Think about it... If he doesn't have a contract by then he would be insuring for future income that could be lost due to a major injury prior to signing a contract. A player like Gaudreau stands to make $7 to $8 million per year so he would be insuring with that in mind. Probably ends up being pretty costly and millionaires don't stay millionaires by throwing tons of money around.
Also... Could just be an excuse not to go. We don't know for sure.

But he's in a boat with Johnny. I just hope Byfuglien isn't driving the boat.

Was it 93 that Niewendyk suffered that bad knee injury in this tourney. Ever since that I've never been too bothered about Flames players not going.
