Default Flames have yet to start contract talks with David Jones

http://flamesnation.ca/2016/1/1/flam...avid-jones-yet

Quote:
Veteran right-wing David Jones may be on the back-burner a bit right now - both in the eyes of fans and management - as a few dominoes need to fall before he becomes a priority. When I spoke with him prior to Saturday's game against Edmonton, he noted that he has yet to have any contract talks with the Flames.

"Anytime you're a UFA and your contract is expiring, you look at the possibility of being traded or sort of what's next. As far as this team, I haven't had any discussions with them. It's a matter of just going out and trying to win. Playoffs last year helps everyone and if we can get back there, I think it'll be good for everyone," said Jones.

I truly hope it never starts.

Trade him and get something in return and find an cheaper internal replacement for what he is, a bottom 6 forward.

That sounds like a player who knows hes getting traded or will simply not be offered a new contract and sent on his merry way.

Hopefully he can be traded for something. I can't see the flames wanting to bring him back unless it's at an extremely reduced contract.

Same here. I think the Flames need to start moving out all their veteran players over the next 18 months and replace them either internally or through trade/ufa. There isn't one player outside of Giordano and Frolik that is a veteran and is playing good enough to keep.

I hope you're right, but can you see a cup contender seeing David Jones as the piece that puts them over the top? No offense to the player but I just can't see it, especially with cap space at a premium. He really is frustrating as he can be lights out then disappear for a long stretch. Needed to take him back when we moved tanguay which in itself was a positive. No harm, no foul, wish him well wherever he lands next year.

Stajan IMO. Just on a cheaper contract.

The Calgary Flames are at a stage where, like said earlier, are where they need to transition into moving away from the veterans.

David Jones has been good these past few years bringing his intangibles into the game but him being very streaky and injury-prone will make management look elsewhere. Do we sign someone who can replicate what he does but better, or are there options in the system?

One can hope that Hathaway will fill that spot or even F.Hamilton if we choose to resign him for the next season.

Out of all our highly paid veterans, I'd like to keep Stajan as I think he brings a lot of grit and intangibles. Wish Jones the best though, he really found another gear in the playoffs last year.

Someone has to play RW for this team, and Jones is one of the few big-bodied wingers we have. Anyone have any suggestions of some UFAs that would fit the bill better?

We have Shore, Hamilton, Poirier, and Hathaway in the minors looking close to NHL ready. You need a spot open for them to compete for that spot.

Kyle Okposo but we can't afford him.

You might get the same from Garnet Hathaway next season for about $3 million less.

There's always the possibility of a trade as well.

Jones really doesn't bring anything, hot spurt here and there but mostly invisible. That kind of production won't be hard to replace at all.

Over the next 2-3 seasons the Flames really need to roll over some of these over priced veteran depth players to younger cheaper depth players, while at the same time the young core takes on more and more of the leadership of the room (not including Gio, who IMO isn't going anywhere).

This starts with Jones and Hudler this season IMO.

Next season it's Smid, Engelland, Wideman, Raymond and Bollig.

My hope is, that all of the above players will play well enough to return the Flames something via deadline trades, but that's probably not realistic, and in the end some of them might just walk into free agency.

Jones is useless. While he may be streaky, his streaks just aren't consistent enough for him to score when the team needs it. He doesn't use his body enough to be able to win enough board battles or push guys off the puck. He doesn't bring the puck into the zone with any consistency. For 4 million, I fail to see what he brings to the team. Maybe he's a good locker room guy. But you rarely hear stories about him at all in regards to him helping mentor the young players. Whomever his agent is must have laughed all the way to the bank after that horrible contract was signed.

I hope he's traded to some sucker by the deadline. I'll be extremely disappointed if he's brought back. I was looking forward to him being on the team when he was traded for Tanguay. But other then a couple flashes here and there (like all NHL players have), he doesn't bring anything a younger cheaper guy could bring.

One of my favorite memories of him was his expression when he celebrated Stajan's GWG in game 6 against the Canucks. He was pretty great in the playoffs and carved a pretty good career for himself for being a 9th round pick, but is way too expensive for what he brings. Hope he gets a contract elsewhere tho

No thanks. He can ply his 2 goal season elsewhere.

The more interesting discussion would be what could we potentially get for him at the deadline? I'm not expecting much but something is better than nothing. Hopefully a team is looking to add some size.

What 2-goal season would this be?

I think there's a few guys that see the writing on the wall when it comes to their future with the team.

Jones
Backlund
Hudler
Wideman
Russell
Raymond

These guys have to have some sort of clue that their future isn't with the Flames and it shows, they're all kind of mailing it in. And that's why it will be a busy feb-july 1 for treliving. Lets get this roster to the next level and dump the passengers!
