Default Byron scores two goals in Winter Classic

Byron scored two goals, including the game winner, in a 5 - 1 win by Montreal over Boston in the Winter Classic.

Byron is also tied for first in the NHL for short handed points at 4 (3 goals and 1 assist).

He has also played 160+ NHL games and qualifies for an NHL pension.

Glad to see he is doing so well...I miss him.

Meh. I know he's loved over on HF, and I would love to see him here, but I think he'd be in the pressbox too often.

The Flames miss his spark and his PK work.

The 3-goalie situation cost us Byron, pushed Ortio's development way back, and may cost us a playoff birth.

When did Hartley ever consider Byron for the press box? Byron was more often in our top 6 than even close to being scratched. People were often pissed about "why was Byron our 6th man out with the empty net" or "why is Byron out on 4 on 4".

Literally the coach's favorite player, like Russell is right now. Though unlike RUssell, Byron had good possession stats.

I wouldn't blame the three goalie situation. They came into this season with too many forwards and refused to demote Raymond or Bollig when they were the worst forwards on the roster.

What?

Raymond was put on waivers. The only reason Byron was as well was because they had 3 goalies.

And the only reason Montreal claimed Byron is because Kassian was wasted/high in a car accident.

So blame Kassian.

But not demoted.

We had enough roster spots to keep Byron even with three goalies.

His lack of a demotion has nothing to do with this.

If not for the 3 goalies, they wouldn't have put Byron on waivers.

Raymond wasn't sent down because they didn't need to send him down after Byron got claimed.

Yeah Byron is a very useful player on a good contract. Exactly what you want in a utility player and on top of it, he is a premium penalty killer.

Regardless of what you blame for his being placed on waivers, it is hard to stomach that he is making a meaningful contribution to one of the top teams in the league, whereas the Flames are closer to being at the bottom of the standings and couldn't find room for him.

How about this: just not put Byron on waivers at all?

Put Raymond on waivers and send him down. Easy as pie.

At the time we had three goalies. But with a 23 man roster limit we had this:

1)Gaudreau
2)Hudler
3)Monahan
4)Bennett
5)Backlund
6)Frolik
7)Stajan
8)Byron
9)Jones
10)Bouma
11)Ferland
12) Jooris
13) Bollig
14) Gio
15) Hamilton
16) Wideman
17) Russell
18) Engelland
19) Kulak
20) Hiller
21) Ramo
22) Ortio
23) Raymond
Colborne (IR)
Brodie (IR)
Smid (IR)
Culkin (IR)

The three goalie situation did not force them to waive Byron. Why they did it was beyond me.

Also Byron > Raymond

I believe Brodie and Colborne had to be on the 23-man roster before they could placed on IR. If someone more knowledgeable maybe could weigh in that be great.

Byron is a good fit on the Habs. But the romance for the little man by some Flames fans is a little bit too much. He was a good plucky player but the GM didn't see a spot for him in CGY. Not the coach, the GM.

I liked him, I just never seen the extra value others have placed on him.

He'll fare well in Montreal for a couple of seasons I think, it's nice he has found that finishing touch that just didn't exist while he was with CGY.

I would rather have Byron in the lineup over Jooris, Raymond, or Ferland but it is what it is. He's really missed on the PK which has struggled.

PPG with Calgary, prior 2 seasons: .385
PPG with the Habs this year: .321
