Scenes of 1982 Calgary from Superman III Documentary
I've always been a sucker for glimpses into the vintage Calgary I grew up in but mostly can't remember because I was too young or it was before my time.
For that reason, I've always loved Superman III, despite it's shortcomings because of the wealth of Calgary locations in the film.
I just came across this really rare and obscure documentary on Superman III from a Spanish source and about mid-way through, there are tons of behind the scenes videos of downtown Calgary in 1981 or 1982 from angles you never see in the film.
Starting at 10:20, there's a great skyscraper shot where you can see the emerging skyline (the Petro Canada/Suncor towers are in progress!). Then there's tons of great street level stuff from around the Bow Valley parkade, Bow Valley Plaza, Esso Plaza, and other places, like the East Village when evil Superman is drinking at the St. Louis, etc. Smallville is also filmed High River and rural Alberta (as was done on Superman I). My buddy's claim to fame is that his wife used to date the boy who played Ricky in this movie!

I was in the final 3 babies to play naked baby superman that claims out of the crater in Superman 1. Would have been really cool to say I had a full frontal nudity part in a Hollywood blockbuster. However, thankfully not getting the part saved me years of embarrassment and explaining, "I'm a grower, not a shower!"

if you want to hear some cool stories go down to the star trek musuem in Vulcan the guy who runs it was on the set, has a bunch of memorabilia from the superman movie, and him and his family were in the film industry. They have a lot more than just star trek there and a lot of neat stories.

Getting closer to figuring out where exactly Prior skiied down the glass.
The stunt man they showed off and on starting at around 21 mins was skiing down the glass in a NE direction, at the far NE corner of Gulf Canada Square. Reflection of the Calgary Tower is in the building. You can see the location on the roof in Google maps.
However, it doesn't appear that this was the final shot used in the movie. When they show the final movie clip around the 28 min mark, filming from inside, Scotia Center is to the left and the Dome tower is to the right of the shot, which means the skier is from the north, in a SE direction.
There's a similar triangular glass atrium roof on the south side of Energy Plaza, which would give the right direction of that final shot. Correct me if I am wrong. Then he lands on1st facing West towards Esso Plaza.
Other things of note. The beige concrete and steps up to Bow Valley Square on the corner of 2nd St and 6Ave. Pointless.
And where was that restaraunt, Cardinals?

I guess that's what Bow Valley Square used to look like before the first makeover that built a new facade on that side? (And then there was a 2nd one in the early 2000s?).
In beginning of the Cardinals shot where they are looking over the boards, I think I see McDougall Centre in the background? I can't figure this one out. I can't figure out where the pie scene is taking place either. Some of these buildings may be gone as we have torn so much down in the last decade.

I could be wrong, but I was doing the exact same thing a few years ago. If I remember correctly that shot from inside is flipped.
It's been closed for decades now hasn't it? Was too young to ever drink there!
Maybe not the St. Louis specifically but I meant plowing down low end scotch in the middle of the day in the East Village. Surely we've all been there...

No, I've only learned about Scotch from these esteemed gentlemen.

I thought about that. Makes more sense as to what I see, as behind Scotia in the actual shot is what looked like BVS. Plus the buildings seem further away from where they would be if it was shot at Energy Plaza. The building south of Scotia now wouldn't have been there 34 years ago.
Just doesn't make sense as to why they would go through the trouble to flip the background for 3 seconds.
