Fairly new 737-800. So far stormy weather with gusty 90k winds to blame...I'm no airline pilot but to me if you can circle an airport for 2 hours you can go to a safer airport to land.

Sounds like they were trying to abort and advised ATC they were aborting with the intention of diverting, then they went down. The winds at the time were gusting to ~60 kph from what I've read, so gusty but not unmanageable... that's a typical day at YYC. Severe ice or some other combination of factors is to blame, because that type of wind alone doesn't bring down a 738.

The official story is that a gust of and struck the plane low to the ground blowing if off course. Can't see how that would cause a fire.

I would guess that's not the initial contact with the ground you can see on the video but rather the last part of the crash.
