This is Canada? Doubt the guy would spend much time at all in prison if it was his first offence.

Not his first offense.
He also hit her with a toaster, strangled her, damaged her vocal chords, and left her with a severe concussion. She was unconscious, and her head injuries were severe. The person in question was jailed beginning of September, made bail, but rearrested for violating his bail conditions.

Yeah... hopefully he is put in general population and spends the rest of his days biting pillows.

My question is this: If a 97 pound woman 5' tall was assaulted badly and hospitalized for two weeks by a man she had been dating for three years. She is my friend, and I find it absolutely disgusting that someone can do this, especially since my friend is currently being treated for PTSD, and concussion symptoms.
Are there any people who work at correctional institutions who can fill me in on how they would fit in, with the rest of the population, and would this be frowned upon? Thanks.

I'd say about a third, if not more of people in jail are there for domestic assault. As a result, he wouldn't exactly be singled out for anything.
Being in there for rape on the other hand, draws special attention from other inmates.

Ok, just chatted with my CO friend who works in a Provincial Correctional Institute in BC.
He explained that unless and incoming inmate has a notable name that was in the news, or someone already in gen pop knows them, there is no real way for the other inmates to know what they are in for. It's quite simple for someone with a rape/pedo offense to lie to other inmates about what their offense was.

Occasionally if it's an unpleasant crime the guards might leave the file open on the desk 'by mistake'.
The question really is whether your friends assailant is a criminal as well as an abuser? guys that come in who arnt criminals don't know the ropes, have no friends or connections inside and tend to be low on the pecking order.
If it's any consolation it won't be a pleasant experience for the jerk even if he doesn't get the beating he deserves.

An attack of that nature won't bring the accused any unusual attention. His behaviour and/or connections will dictate his status on the inside. I'm seen some pretty nasty cases of violence towards women in my line of work and there is generally no real special attention paid to inmates with this type of history. Violence against children is a whole other story..

It will also depend on the institution he is sent to. Example....There is a lot of sex offenders at the Bowden pen so if your were a child molester chances are you wouldn't be bothered much at all if you were sent there (I sell to the prisons in AB and Sask so I have some good relations/stories with people that have worked there many years)

Mainly release clothes, but we do sell them a few things like sweats, shoes, winter hats etc to the inmates. We also sell some Nikes for the inmates that do the blood cleanup. Their reward for being part of that crew is nicer shoes than everyone else

Ironically the possession of a nicer pair of shoes was probably the cause of the blood on the floor in the first place.
