Default Hateful Eight & The Revenant (and more) Leaked

Looks like a slew of movie screeners have hit torrent sites. This happens every year but these two haven't even hit theatres yet. You'd think this has to hurt their box office.

When are they going to figure out a better way to distribute these films for oscar consideration?

Quote:
The copies of the films are among a slew of high-profile films that have been pirated as part of what has become known as "Oscar screener season" by those who copy, share and download illegal, pirated copies of films. While the makers of films like "The Walk," "Steve Jobs," "Creed," "Brooklyn," "Straight Outta Compton" and "Carol" will all be angry at their films appearing on dozens of torrent sites, it will be the release of "The Hateful Eight" and "The Revenant" over the weekend — and before the films are even in cinemas — that will cause the most consternation among Hollywood executives.

It's a major leak with more to come. Oscar hopefuls like Joy, Carol, Legend, The Revenant, Hateful Eight, Creed, Steve Jobs, The Good Dinasaur and other already out there. Wouldn't surprise (hope) if things like Spotlight and Macbeth get out there too.

This happens every year but seems bigger this year and is getting more news.

I really want to see The Revenant in theatres though so I won't bother.

Unfortunately both of those movies are coming out after the christmas break. Not sure when I can squeeze in 6 hours to see two movies except during the break, quite disappointed.

Still not going to pirate them but the movie distribution method is still broken.

I'm surprised people even care about the Oscars anymore. I'm more likely to watch a movie based on a good review at Rotten Tomatoes than watch any of the Oscar winners.

The Oscars are just a wankfest for all the celebrities to congratulate each other for being super awesome. I've never had any interest in watchnig them, and their best picture choices are usually questionable.

i often wonder how much this stuff really hurts the box office take, as i have access to "high-speed" interent, but i really like going to the theater, so despite the fact the movies are availible out there, i would still go.

to me both movies look like crap anywyas, so i won't go for that reason

I wonder if the industry is not nearly as concerned about pirates as they portray. A good number of those who watch pirated movies would never have paid in the first place. I'm sure they don't like seeing it happen, but they aren't ready to put massive resources into countering it.

What they do does a good job of keeping honest people honest.

PS- I am in no way trying to promote watching illegally downloaded movies, or saying it's ok to download copies, just speculating on hollywood's position.

You could shove a copy of hateful eight in my hands and I'd still wait to see it in theatres with friends (I know some tarentino geeks).

We live in a world where major movies are on DVD 3 months after release and Netflix 6 months after release, people pay for the theatre experience because they want to, not because they have to.

So you are saying people that like to watch movies wouldn't watch any movies if they have to pay? Sure they would likely watch less but just like everyone else they would pay to watch the movies they really want to watch whether it be in the theatre or via home video. What you are saying is just a lazy defense for pirating even though you say you aren't an advocate of it.

And yes the industry is extremely concerned about pirating.

I don't know. I will say there have been some good movies over the years I wouldn't have watched had it not been for being Oscar recognized like The Birdman or Whiplash for instance and that's just last year. I don't have time to watch every 80+ rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes and I have also seen a lot of those 80+ rated RT movies that I didn't think were that good.

I think the operative word in his post was "a good number". I don't think what he's saying is much different than what you're saying. If piracy was abolished tomorrow they'd pay, but I bet they'd watch far fewer movies.

Is this just you trying to be a contrarian? While the movies may turn out to be poor stories (doubt it) with bad acting (doubt it) but there's no question the movies are visually stunning. Such a strange comment.

How does this happen? I mean, I get the crazy neckbeard that decides to sit in a movie theater with a camera, but these are actual decent copies of the film.

It makes me wonder sometimes, I remember way back in the day some bands would find ways to leak their albums because the band gets limited revenue from the sale of the albums themselves, what they wanted was people to come and see their show so they actually made more money by freely exposing the album in order to get more people to come to their show.

I dont know if that same economic structure applies to movies, whether people will see a movie in somewhat crappy quality and think:

"That was good! I'm going to see that in the theater!"

I believe they're DVD screeners that are sent out to Academy Awards voters.

There are about 6,000 Academy members, so all it takes is one of them to rip the copy they were sent and upload it. I believe they put some kind of identifiable watermark on the video to help identify anyone who does this, but it's probably not hard to mask it out.

IIRC, in past years, they have been able to identify people who have done this and they have been kicked out of the Academy. Often, it's someone who works for the Academy member, or one of their kids who actually does the ripping and uploading.
