The Minnesota Wild has signed defenseman Jared Spurgeon to a four-year, $20.75 million contract extension starting with the 2016-17 season.
Spurgeon, 26 (11/29/89), owns 16 points (4-12=16), four penalty minutes (PIM) and a plus-4 rating in 31 games this season. He leads the team in blocked shots (65), ranks second in TOI/game (22:15) and his point total ranks second amongst Wild defensemen and tied for seventh overall on the team.
Spurgeon collected 25 points (9-16=25) in 66 games with Minnesota last season and established career highs in goals, shots (128) and blocked shots (124) and ranked second amongst team defensemen in scoring and third in blocked shots and TOI/game (22:37). The 5-foot-9, 176-pound native of Edmonton, Alta., has collected 117 points (30-87=117) and a plus-18 rating in 326 career NHL games during six seasons with Minnesota (2010-15). He has been whistled for the fewest PIM (38) amongst NHL defensemen that have played at least 300 games in the NHL since 2010-11.

No way I pay $5.19M AAV for Russell. Anything over $4M is overpayment IMO. Heck, I'm not sure I even want him on the Flames for $3.5M to be honest. I'd rather just trade him at the deadline for picks.

Suter at 7.5 until 2025
Spurgeon at 5.2 until 2020
Brodin at 4.1 until 2021
Scandella at 4.0 until 2020
that's a lot of money tied to the blueline. And Matt Dumba is coming off his ELC too ...

That's steep. What is Fletcher doing dumping that much dough into the D corps?

I like him but that's a steep contract. And no way is Russel worth close to 5Mil. He mite get a overpayment from another team around those numbers, but not from us.

A touch high maybe. But defensemen are expensive. Top 4 defensemen are more expensive. And RH defensemen make about $1M more than an equivalent LH defenseman.

Yup, Russell is one of the most overrated Flames. I see him as a bottom pairing guy that shouldn't make more than $2.5 a season.

I'm not a big fan of Russell but he's been doing pretty well paired with Hamilton, still I don't think he fits into our cap for more than $3M. We have 6 NHL defencemen signed for next season with a player or two knocking on the door. I don't think he'll be missed much if he doesn't re-sign.

I think Russell will be missed. I think he is a very solid top 4 defender. I just don't think the Flames can or should re-sign him to what he will probably command in the off-season. I am 100% ok trading him for picks, but I am sure he will be missed at least until someone steps up and takes his spot.
He has been really good of late - back to last year's form I would say. I was starting to think that last year was an aberration, but he is looking very much like last year's Russell.

Every D-signing makes Brodie's contract look even better!

I'd love to see Jakub Nakladal get a call up. Would be nice to see what he's capable of at the NHL level. He could definitely help soften the blow of losing Russell.

Every time I see Dman signed I do the same thing. Fact is, we have one of the best Dmen in the game for under 5 Million. All contracts are going to look bad comparison.

in fairness, I don't believe they are at the same spot in the contract life span.
wasn't Brodie's deal signed as all RFA years? Spurgeons are buying his UFA years.
correct me if I am wrong.

I believe the Flames bought at least 2 years of UFA in his current contract.

My preference would be to keep Russell but only for a three year team at a max of 3.5 million per season. If in the next couple of years one or two of the young guys in the Flames system are pushing Kris Russell down to a 6th or 7th defenseman spot, well that hopefully means the Flames are doing great during the regular season.
If it doesn't look like BT can get Russell signed by this year's trade deadline for close to the dollars above, then the best move would be to get some draft picks for Kris.

The Flames absolutely have to move one or more of Smid, Wideman, or Engellend if they even want to consider re-signing Russell. I think Russell maybe would sign a $3.5M contract as a home town discount but he likely gets $4.5-5M if he hits the market.
As of right now the Flames have 6 Dmen signed in the range of $2.9-$6.75M. No room for Russell unless some guys are moved

I would only keep Russell on a contract that is four years or less at no more than $3.5 million/season. Anything more than that is overpayment for a guy that's a serviceable overall defenseman but terrible in his own end when the opposing team has possession and cycling the puck.

Bang on. I do like the guy but not for anything more than this. Maybe 4 if we didn't have Smid and Engellands contracts

I would rather sign a Paul Martin type vet for 2-3 years to replace Russell than sign him for more than 4 million a year.
