Flames Treliving article - Journal de Montreal

French article, where Treliving is heralded as being smart to recognize that trades during the regular season as being increasingly difficult and making a splash with the Hamilton trade.

Conduct transactions in the NHL seems more and more difficult in the regular season and it will be so as long as the Canadian dollar will continue to get bogged down.

Why? Because more than a third of the league's revenue comes from Canadian franchises. This has a direct impact on the salary cap. Result, as long as the loonie will falter, the salary cap will not increase.
This is why general managers have to be very creative to improve their training.

In the Western Conference, Brad Treliving, Flames, quickly understood the need to be aggressive to get his way. He stole the show at the last draft by acquiring Dougie Hamilton Bruins in exchange for a first round pick and two second-round pick.

This transaction has taken everyone by surprise and today it defines the career of the young CEO. And after a difficult start, Hamilton seems more and more comfortable in the Bob Hartley system.

"It's a single transaction, but I do not regret at all, says Treliving in a telephone interview. Find a young talent handed defenseman, it's very difficult to do. I gave my first round pick, who was the 15th overall, and I have asked my scouts if Dougie Hamilton was available at that time draft pick, is what would make his selection? The answer was that it was impossible for a defender of this qualification is available so far in the draft and had to lay hands on him. It is what I did. A defender of this kind, which measures 6 feet 6 inches, it is not like that. He had to cope with the pressure, but since a couple of games, he is really good. "

On how it is near impossible to make a trade during the regular season

Quote:
After a little more than 16 months in office, Treliving learned that it is really difficult to compromise in the regular season and it's summer he can improve his team.

"We are in a system where the salary cap dictates everything. There's half of the teams that spend almost the maximum and the others must stick to a budget. So very few teams can add money to their payroll. It is presently dollar against dollar. It's very difficult if not impossible to compromise. But there is also another thing he learned rapidly as general manager.

"You can never make a decision under the influence of emotion. I know that hockey is a game where there are many, but it can not dictate your way of working. We must be patient and understanding. "

Other tidbits:
Ren Lavoie connects the dots that Treliving and Sweeny having a good relationship likely a reason why Hamilton ended up in Calgary.

Treliving won't comment on the reports about Bernier, but does say Ramo is playing better as of late.

Treliving says he talks to Bergevin almost every day and that they try to help each other out as they are not in the same conference.

Encouraging to hear that the Flames GM seems to be not only liked but also respected by other GMs in the league.

Wonder if Bergevin and Treliving talking so much led to Montreal claiming Byron

There's probably something to that thought. Treliving talks to almost all the GMs on a very regular basis, so he has the pulse of what others are thinking. He probably told Bergevin that Byron doesn't have much interest by many.

Maybe Treliving waived Byron, knowing that Bergevin wanted him and because they talk so much, and are likely good friends, Bergevin will do a solid in return... we're totally getting Carey Price next summer!

...oops, too much "Christmas cheer" this early in the day.
