Flames McKenzie: Gaudreau and Monahan could be the Calgary Flames' Toews and Kane

What Flames fans knew for some time...

http://www.tsn.ca/radio/toronto-1050...-kane-1.411371

Calls Gaudreau one of the best offensive players and one of the most exciting and dynamic players in the NHL

Says if the Flames are going to establish themselves as Stanley Cup contenders then the parallels need to be made:
Monahan is a Toews type entity and Gaudreau is their Kane like entity

I wish they wouldn't draw so much national attention. Remember when TJ and Gio were the best kept secrets in the NHL? I like the anonymity.

Anonymity is usually synonymous with homerism.

If our players are getting international attention, it's a good sign the opinions on what we're seeing aren't based on bias alone.

Was just writing this, for the other thread, but since its here:

- Goaltending was a major problem at the beginning of the season.

- Last night Ramo saved them against Dallas and he came with a big performance.

- Johnny Gaudreau was the one guy who hasn't dropped when the rest of the team did.

- Monahan is getting it together, tremendous player.

- How much money will Gaudreau & Monahan get?

- Gaudreau, small sample size, arbitration rights etc. He will be a Patrick Kane and Monahan is their Toews. Their contract will have a ripple effect on the rest of the team.

- The Calgary Flames are going to establish themselves as Stanley Cup contenders with those two players.

I like this! I've seen flames fans take so much heat from other fan bases for this comparison. So many times they just say we are homers, well guess what! One of the most reapectable guys in the hockey world is saying it too.

Thanks, but also; Duh!

Many of us have been saying that for a long time.

Will brodie/hamilton = keith/seabrook someday? Probably

Not the same style, but I'm hoping Brodie/Hamilton will have the same impact on the team as Keith/Seabrook.

Bold prediction time: Brodie/Hamiton will be a pairing in the 2018 Winter Olympics (if NHL players end up going)

It's not as if our opponents aren't already aware...

Nice to hear this opinion coming from well respected main stream media after seeing it repeated here for a couple years now.

Gaudreau - 22
Monahan - 21
Bennett - 19
Brodie - 25
Hamilton - 22

Should be able to build something decent around that young core for the next 10 years or so.

Gaudreau/Monahan = Kane/Toews? .... Yes Please. Ill take that with a side of Brodie/Hamilton = Keith/Seabrook.

I posted a more detailed analysis looking at the two teams and roster turnover(http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=145556) but just looking at their records:

Chicago:

2006/07 - 13th in conference, missed playoffs
2007/08 (Kane/Toews rookie year) - 10th in conference, missed playoffs
2008/09 - 4th in conference, eliminated in 3rd round
2009/10 - Stanley Cup

Calgary:

2012/13 (lockout year) - 13th in conference, missed playoffs
2013/14 (Monahan rookie year) - 13th in conference, missed playoffs
2014/15 (Gaudreau rookie year) - 8th in conference, eliminated in 2nd round
2015/16 - ???

Frolik is Hossa lite. Swiss army knife, elite PKer, possession specialist who can play well with anyone. Not the same offensive touch but I would really like to see Frolik on the PP at some point, see what he can do with more space.

I think that not next year, but the year after, we could be easily in the Chicago realm of hype.
2017/18
Established Gaudreau/Monahan
Third Year Bennett
Second Year Janko
First full Year Gilles
Defense of Gio/Hamilton/Brodie/one of 6 prospects
Solid supporting cast including any draft pick/surprise/not so surprise prospect

And I wouldn't really worry that much about keeping the band together. I think that Gaudreau and Monahan sign for less than other stars, because they will be eating RFA years with their next contract.

I wouldn't count on Jankowski or Gillies until they've proven themselves in the NHL. You can never be too sure until guys actually show what they got at the highest level.

All we need now is a #1 RW...
