Icon45 Leafs tell Cowen to go home and await buyout

Terry Koshan @koshtorontosun
Lamoriello says intention is to buy out Cowen this summer. Won't be playing a game. #Leafs

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Jared Cowen won't play again this season because #leafs intend to buy him out in June.

Leafs won't risk him getting injured because you can't buyout injured players. They apparently tried to trade him but failed.

He should just count his lucky stars that the NHL has guaranteed contracts.

I don't think this should be allowed, he should have the option to at least play in the AHL. Bush league move.

Boy, that's cheap and bush league. He still should be able to practice and stay in shape, be a part of the team. It would serve them right if everyone gets injured and they have to call on him, only he can't play because he hasn't practiced at all.

Then teams should be allowed to buy out injured players.

Well it could be for financial reasons or cap reasons. But I get not being able to buy out injured players. That would be discriminatory to "terminate" a player because they got injured

Didn't this happen to Scott Gomez and Wade Redden, and they allowed the teams to buy them out immediately so they could still play?

They could probably mutally terminate the contract but no way Cowen is going to do that. Sucks for his ego, but it's not the worst thing to happen. He's going to get paid millions to do nothing.

He should spend this time and go to hockey school and learn how to play defense.

So they get the bizarre cap relief of this buyout next season? But then get the cap hit on the 17-18 season?
