Maple Leafs send Jonathan Bernier to the Marlies
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/t...o-the-marlies/
Bernier gets sent to AHL for 10 day conditioning Stint with the Marlies. Hopefully he gets his mojo back. He's a decent goalie.

Nope, for a conditioning stint you don't need to.

Unlike Ortio he agreed to a conditioning stint so he doesn't have to pass through waivers. Good move as he obviously is more interested in getting play time and getting back on track than trying to force the team's hand in putting him through the waiver wire.

I wonder if Ortio's motivation might be that he doesn't want to play here any more and he was trying to use what little power he had as a means to that end?

Maybe he just wanted to go on waivers hoping someone else would give him a chance

That's what I meant, though I may have worded it poorly.

Too bad it's not a waivers situation.
He couldn't be worse than Hiller has been this year. And even if he is as bad, you know the potential is there in him to improve significantly.

I think Hiller for Bernier is a great trade for both teams. I loved the proposal on our trade rumor thread that was taken from HF. Raymond and Hiller for Bernier and Grabner. The 2 for 2 swap is very enticing as both teams send out an expiring (Hiller $4.5M and Grabner 3.5M) and each take on a player with an extra year (Bernier $4.3M and Raymond $3.15M) flames take on the bigger cap commitment but all 4 players could benefit from a change of scenery.
I like it because it is a low cost move to get a goalie in his prime years with a short commitment. If the Flames go after a guy like Bishop this summer it is going to cost a lot. I think Bernier has the tools to be a solid goalie and worth the risk

No kidding, Hiller is gone after this season. Still one more year of Bernier left after this one.

Still not seeing why the Leafs would say yes to this or this expanded proposal.
And a lot of opposition to Calgary saying yes.
So, does two no's make a yes?

Why not?
Bernier has potential.
Hiller and Ramo are both terrible.
Ortio will never get his chances for as long as Hartley is around.
TOR gets off the hook of Bernier's contract in exchange for an upcoming UFA.
We actually need a minimum of 2 goalies under contract next year.
Would anyone of you prefer BT brings back Hiller and Ramo again?

Because Bernier has been an alright starter for a bad team these past two seasons.
Had a .922 save percentage two years ago, and a .912 save percentage last year. Played over 55 games in both seasons.
That one year contract at $4.3 Million is a minimal cost if:
A) You only have to give up a Ramo/Hiller to get him
B) Probably will be much cheapers (and shorter term) then any UFA, and will cost much less in a trade (Goalies fetched 1st rounders or multiple 2nds this offseason)
