Icon59 Oilers place Fayne on waivers

Per Oilers twitter

"The Oilers have placed defenceman Mark Fayne on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Bakersfield"

He is actually one of their better defensemen by most metrics.

I am surprised somebody wouldn't take a flyer on him, maybe with $1M retained, especially with the premium on RH dmen.

Feels like the tank is on already in Edmonton because I doubt Gryba, Ference, etc are actually better than Fayne.

At 3.5 million bucks for 2 more years after this one its doubtful.

He's a bottom pairing guy who can squeeze into middle pairing minutes if they're desparate. But the Oilers basically sold him as a top pairing guy. Of course he's going to fail.

Unless the Oilers retain half of his salary, I doubt he's going anywhere.

Brutal signing by MacTavish. Unfortunately his contract isn't up at the end of the year like Nikitin's.

Nikita Nikitin - 4.5
Ben Schrivens - 2.3
Mark Faynce - 3.65

10.45 million dollars all in the minors for Edmonton. That doesn't include Ference's 3.25 million which would be there but isn't due to the genius NMC he has.

Montreal says thanks for Jeff Petry. Edmonton is no good.

I do have to look back at that offseason and laugh.

Oilers fans were so excited that they signed Fayne who was a legitimate top 4 d-man that came from New Jersey. While we went and overpaid for Engelland who was a bottom pairing goon.

A year and a half later Engelland has been pretty solid for us (especially down the stretch and so far this year), and Fayne is on waivers.

Getting rid of Smid and Petry . . . The two guys they actually shouldn't have let go.

Wait until Gryba and Reinhart are considered busts, then it gets even more funny.

But wait? I thought according to the Oilers fan base their defense was improved by a factor of 7615 compared to last year (trust me multiply 0 by any number still equals terrible)

The Oilers might have a reduced goals against but that blueline is still not passing the eye ball test. They're still giving up massive chances and floating or wandering around with no clue of what they're doing, they just have Nilsson playing out of his head right now.

What do they have on their blueline that's respectable? Nurse? Absolutely but he's not near yet. Klefbom? I think he tops out as a middle pairing guy, but he's been getting the over rated treatment.

They don't have much on the farm prospect wise or in their pool that looks like another top of the corp option.

MacT sure made shrewd UFA signings.

What an eye for talent that guy has.

Brutal, but I recall for some strange reason there was a lot of hype around him just prior to free agency. I never understood why and just assumed that I must have missed something.

I guess in the end, he really was just being overhyped.

Is MacTavish officially worse than Risebrough as a GM?

It was the first offseason where Advanced Stats were becoming a thing and he had really good advanced stats in New Jersey...if you ignored the split from when he was playing with Matt Greene against when he wasn't playing with Matt Greene.

I guess its an indication of how little say MacT has now that his guys keep getting sent down to the A.

Reinhart has looked good, I've heard.

What I can see happening with him though, is getting in over his head and his confidence taking a hit. I could be wrong, but I think he's playing top pairing minutes.

well, someone has to but its not him.

season to-date, hes playing 16 minutes a game...same as...Fayne.

Klefbom and Sekera lead the team in ice with 22/20 minutes.

I'll stand by my long standing view that Reinhardt is all kinds of hot garbage.

If you're the Devils, you should absolutely claim the guy. You're fighting for a wild card spot without much D depth and here's a guy you know already... Fayne / Greene were a good pairing before, no reason to think they won't be now.
