Staal off to the Island
Outside of Chara who is good but still old, and Enstrom who is solid if not unspectacular, we really needed a solid Top 4 Dman to anchor our blue line.
Hence welcoming Marc Staal to the Island.
the deal breaks down as follows:
To Isles
Marc Staal (71)
To Rangers
Patrick Wiercioch (68)
Stuart Percy
Mark McNeill
JF Berube
We likely overpaid for Staal given all the assets we gave up and only a 3 OVR difference but we really needed a top 4 guy like Staal.
Wiercioch is a young top 4 dman with Ottawa who has been solid but not amazing
He is still only 24 so lots of upside still.
Percy is a late 1st pick in 11', with a good opportunity next year for a gig with the Leafs.
Berube played his first NHL game this year and was OK...but likely has a chance on the Isles given their lack of goalie depth.
McNeill is a former 1st as well...performing solid in the AHL but stuck in the Hawks prospect depth.
I think the # of assets offsets the risk for the Rangers and Wiercioch's age also offsets losing Staal.
