? I'm not a huge fan of his but that's some crazy sensationalist headline. He said the economy defense is the same one the slave owners used. Crap article that reinforces dumb opinions

Suzuki couldn't clone.
So he became a businessman and started selling lies about an industry. Now he makes his living by flying around and giving speeches about climate change while still continuing to abuse the products of the industry he tries to convince you he is against.

Man, Suzuki is such an embarrassment to Canada. Doesn't the guy own like 3 or 4 mansions? I guess it's ok to pollute as long as you're rich. What a freaking hypocrite. Guy should crawl back into the hole he came out of.

Here it is in context in the article... I would argue that the context does not make it ANY better from Suzuki's perspective at all.
Brad Wall: “Whatever it is we agree to going into Paris, whatever we agree to as a country, we need to make sure we understand what impact that’s going to have on jobs. What additional impact will that have on the energy sector, which is already suffering massive layoffs in our country?”
Suzuki: “It sounds very much to me like southern states argued in the 19th century, that to eliminate slavery would destroy their economy,”
That really does strike me as creating a moral equivalence between exploitation of the oil sands and exploitation of slave labour.

Poor choice of words. I would have used major economic disruptions, such as the discovery of the printing press or the internal combustion engine, worded in a positive light, to describe the importance of the environment with the economy.

Do you disagree with the premise? That something more important than economy is at stake so the defense is weak

There are two David Suzukis.
Most of us know one of the Suzukis. Let’s call him Saint Suzuki. That’s the Suzuki whose TV show on the CBC constantly lectures us about our lifestyle. He says we need to consume less, buy less and use less fossil fuels.
But then there’s another Suzuki. Let’s call him Secret Suzuki, because he’s far less well-known.
Secret Suzuki is the one who lives on Vancouver’s elite Point Grey Road, on a double lot, overlooking English Bay, right above the exclusive Kitsilano Yacht Club. The City of Vancouver assesses the land value alone at over $8 million. And that’s just one of Secret Suzuki’s properties.
He has another million-dollar home in Vancouver. And then there’s another home on Quadra Island. That’s three homes right there, if you count the double lot on Point Grey Road as just one property.
But then there’s his large property holdings on Nelson Island. What’s so fascinating about that one is that he co-owns the property with an oil company, Kootenay Oil Distributors Ltd.
Saint Suzuki tells us that the world is desperately overcrowded, that we’re overpopulated, and that we’re going to run out of things.
But in his own life, Secret Suzuki has five children.
Saint Suzuki despises lobbyists, and says they have a disproportionate control of political power in Ottawa. But Secret Suzuki himself has nine paid lobbyists registered in Ottawa’s lobbyist registry. Not one. Nine.
“We have learned, via Dr. Suzuki’s assistant, that although the Dr. does not like to have bodyguards per se, he does not mind having a couple of ladies (females) that would act as body guards.” The college’s Jim Anderson got involved in selecting the coeds, too: “Please be certain that the women are nicely dressed, we don’t want them in evening gowns, but definitely NOT Police Tech uniforms.”
David Suzuki is not a criminal. But he is not a saint. He’s a real man — a capitalist millionaire, a politician, a man with a staff of lobbyists, a prolific father, a wealthy landlord. If only he’d stop scolding the rest of us for aspiring to do the same.

Someone has to say it:
David Suzuki is not a batcrap crazy enviro nutbar, First and foremost he's a brilliant biologist, secondly he's a fine writer, broadcaster and speaker (which is what made him rich.) he only became a climate activist after he retired.
I have seen him twice and what sets him apart from others is he takes questions from all sides, and from what I saw he would tear Brad Wall a new arsehole in a debate.
The slavery comment is over the top but he's far from crazy and he's no dummy.

F David Suzuki. This is the hypocrite, while touring the country, lecturing on climate change and how individuals need to reduce their carbon footprint, leaves his giant tour bus idling outside for the duration. His carbon footprint is much, much larger than any of us regular joe serfs.
Suzuki can go piss up a rope.

Although an extreme analogy, I'd rather have a depressed economy than a depraved, sand-bitten desert Alberta with little moisture and wildfires a common, every-day occurrence and toxic gases polluting our air.
However, I guess that's the balance - how much climate change are we willing to tolerate to be a thriving economy.

Suzuki did it too. He's a hypocrite and he can say whatever he wants, most people are tired of listening.

No one has claimed him as a "dummy". In fact, he is a brilliant capatilist.
He is without question, however, a complete nutbar in his environmental fear mongering. Some, in the Southern states, would even say "crazy as a rabid coon".

If it wasn't for the industrialization of farming practices and irrigation, southern Alberta would be a desert.
Although the Mad Max-esque hyperbole does sound kinda fun.
