[News] Stats from the first quarter (Kris Russell with most shifts/gp in the league)
NHL.com:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=789653
Quote:
Kris Russell, Calgary Flames
The Stat: 33.2 shifts per game, first in the NHL.
The seven players who have played the most shifts per game include three defensemen from each of the Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs, and the workhorse of the Los Angeles Kings, Drew Doughty.
|
Brodie and Giordano are also in the top 4 in shifts / GP.
Quote:
Russell also leads the League with the most power-play ice time without his team scoring a goal, with 32:41.
|
Quote:
The Calgary Flames
The Stat: Outscored 60-27 during the final two periods of games, the widest discrepancy in the NHL.
The Flames have outscored opponents 18-14 in the first period, but have been outscored by 33 goals through the second and third periods, the widest margin by 13 goals. This is in stark contrast to last season, when Calgary outscored opponents 99-68 in the third period.

Let's cheer that up with Jagr stories:
Quote:
Jaromir Jagr, Florida Panthers
The Stat: At age 43, leads the Florida Panthers with 16 points.
The day Aaron Ekblad was born, Jagr had already scored 525 NHL points. He actually played two NHL games against Guy Lafleur, and has been playing longer than nine NHL franchises have existed, including his own. Most impressive, Jagr has scored 180 points in 246 games since turning 40, which is more points than all but three of his current teammates.

I remember last season, hearing about the conditioning of the Flames players being excellent. Wonder if it's a question of other teams catching up, or Flames players not being in the same condition this year. Or just a coincidence.

They could also be overdoing it with the hard practices.

And hitting up 19 year old Czech models in his spare time.
As for the Russell thing I'm not seeing it this year.

Every time he breaks up a 2 on 1 he yells "You shall not pass!"

I don't believe this has anything to do with conditioning. It has everything to do with poor team defense and goaltending.

I think he's up there in Fall Over and Sprawl while Waving Stick per Game as well, and is challenging for Adjusted Fjordwick I Can't Clear the Front of The Net lead this year. Awesome.
As with many others last year, Russel had a career year I'm afraid. This season is quickly turning in to a nightmare.

When it comes to Russell the old "quantity vs quality" argument definitely applies here.

Yeah, you're most likely right. I just don't understand why there is such an obvious discrepancy from how they finished games last season in comparison to this season.
I just remember last year it seemed like the Flames got stronger as the game went on. This season it seems like they start off decent and fade away after the first. The numbers show it, I just don't know the reason behind it. Could be a lot of things.... coaching (failure to adapt), conditioning (get tired as the game wears on), etc....

It was always 70% confidence and 30% luck. I don't now and never did buy the "flames have magic conditioning" argument

The good news is that Russell has shaved his +/- rating in half from his tough start and is playing much better these days. Hopefully, his strong play of late continues (if for no other reason than to drive up his trade value).

I can't believe some fans were pushing that theory this summer.
With how many players that work out together in the summer and go to Perry Pearns, and Biosteel camps together it boggles my mind how anyone could think that any single team could gain a sizable conditioning advantage over all over teams in the league.
Enough that it would lead to drastic improvement in third periods. Everyone is competing to be in the best shape, and there is no way one team could gain any kind of advantage without other teams finding out and matching it.

Well, there is one way but it involves doping. Dick Pound did say at one time that it was widespread in the NHL.
