Ahmed Mohamed, 14yr old arrested over clock mistaken for bomb
I'm sure some of us have heard this story already, but I want to discuss it here.
Texas teen handcuffed, arrested for bringing homemade clock to school
http://www.cbc.ca/news/trending/ahme...bomb-1.3230261
Quote:
A 14-year-old Texas boy was arrested and taken to juvenile detention Monday after teachers mistook the homemade electronic clock he had brought to school for a bomb.
Ahmed Mohamed, a Grade 9 student at MacArthur High School in Irving, has been suspended for three days. Police initially said he may face charges of making a hoax bomb, but later said the case had been closed without charges.
|
Quote:
He showed it to his engineering teacher Monday morning.
"He was like, 'That's really nice,'" Ahmed said. "'I would advise you not to show any other teachers.'"
Ahmed put the clock in his bag after that, but the alarm went off during English class. He showed his invention to the teacher after class was over.
"She was like, it looks like a bomb," he said.
"I told her, 'It doesn't look like a bomb to me.'"
The teacher kept the clock and the principal called police. Officers pulled Ahmed out of class, questioned him, handcuffed him and took him to juvenile detention, where his fingerprints and mug shot were taken, he said.
"It made me feel like I wasn't human. It made me feel like a criminal," he told the Dallas Morning News.
|
Many people, even Obama, have come out in support of Ahmed. On twitter:
Quote:
President Obama
@POTUS
Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great.
|
The poor kid will probably have this memory engraved in his mind forever. We've been talking about equality recently with gay marriage and it's quite apparent that US doesn't even have the basic racial equality down yet.
Edit: this is apparently the letter the principal sent to parents...

I think it's only sensational because it's a brown kid named Ahmed.
Schools these days are paranoid about violence (and rightly so in America) so they take everything to the next level.
The whole thing is obviously absurd, but it's not absurd + racist. Just absurd in my opinion.

A couple of questions to ask yourself: what if it was a legitimate threat, and this device was actually something capable of causing harm and the authorities did nothing? Who puts a clock in a briefcase?
Picture of the kid's clock:
Picture of an actual suitcase bomb:
See the difference? I sure can't.
This leads me to believe that this kid could have planned this out all along for a potential lawsuit: see picture below

I have no problem with the teacher reporting it to the school or the school investigating it, frankly or even taking it away. But the arrest was way over the top.

Is a briefcase the universal symbol of a bomb? Maybe that's all he had lying around or could use.

Either that electrical plug is huge or that "briefcase" is for ants.

Why would the teacher keep the clock if she thought it was a bomb? Wouldn't they evacuate the school immediately?
This is a prime example of 'Murica.

I don't think it was. Remember the pop-tart case?
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/examiner...rt-suspension/
American schools are paranoid. And they have good reason to be. The arrest was obviously absurd though. Once the cops arrived and saw it wasn't a bomb, why arrest him?
I guess we never know the full story, and every story has two sides. I don't think it was racism, just fear. But it could very well have been racism too.
Kinda funny though how you add "And Texas" to your post though accusing them of being racist just because it's Texas. Isn't that stereotyping on your part as well?
