icon53 JG, SM, JH, KR, DJ, JC, JJ, Goalie Extensions - which ones happen, which ones don't?

The Calgary Flames have numerous contracts ending at the conclusion of 2015-16. Some of the major ones include:

Johnny Gaudreau (Previous contract: ELC) - RFA - Age 21
Sean Monahan (Previous contract: ELC) - RFA - Age 20
Jiri Hudler (Previous contract: 4 years, 16 million) - UFA - Age 31
Kris Russell (Previous contract: 2 years, 5.2 million) - UFA - Age 28
David Jones (Previous contract: 4 years, 16 million) - UFA - Age 30
Joe Colborne (Previous contract: 2 years, 1.2 million) - RFA - Age 25
Josh Jooris (Previous contract: 1 year, 0.975 million) - RFA - Age 24
Karri Ramo (Previous contract: 1 year, 3.8 million) - UFA - Age 28
Jonas Hiller (Previous contract: 2 years, 9 million) - UFA - Age 33
Joni Ortio (Previous contract: 2 years, 1.2 million) - RFA - Age 24

(Other expiring deals include those for Derek Grant, Markus Granlund, Jakub Nakladal, Kenny Agostino, Tyler Wotherspoon, Bryce van Brabant, Drew Shore, Bill Arnold, Freddie Hamilton, Turner Elson, and Kevin Poulin).

How do you think that these players should be paid? Who should the Flames retain? Who shouldn't they, under any circumstances?

Personally, I think that they should try to keep these guys:

Gaudreau
Monahan
Hudler
Jones
Ortio

Maybe these guys (if they can afford it):

Ramo
Jooris
Colborne
Russell

And not this guy, under any circumstances:

Hiller

Next year, assuming that the cap goes up ~2 million to 73.5 million, the Flames would have 22.85 million in cap space.

How do you manage your space?

All of the second group (in you ahl pile) except Elson and poulin. JG, SM, +rtio and possibly ramo in the first group. Everyone else you trade, or let go if you can't trade them.

Yes, I forgot to say that I'd like to see every AHL player signed except for Poulin and Elson.

Keep Gaudreau, Monahan, Jooris, Ortio and everyone of the AHL guys except Elson/Poulin

Trade Russell, Jones, Hudler and one of Hiller/Ramo

I'm ready to move on from Jones. It's not that he's been that bad. It's just. Meh

Re: David Jones

His contract demands will not be 4M, and if we let guys like Hiller and Russ walk, then surely we have room for him. His style of play is one that isn't seen anywhere else on the team and he's a really valuable guy to have. He has gotten off to a great start this year, and he has great chemistry with Bouma and Ferland.

Wow. So many dynamics come into play with that question, this is gonna take me a while lol.

Should add AVV and Cap space to that! Then it's time to look up possible UFA's on other teams that could potentially be replacements if there are any. Then after signing priority contracts see how much is left to dish out between the players we might keep if we can get them cheaper or same price.

But regardless of that, byebye Hiller, Probably Hudler.

If we re-sign both Ortio and Ramo doesn't that mean we already have our two starters for next year? I can't envision that happening. Either one is suitable more for the backup role. Ramo is more proven, and Ortio has more potential. But neither should be giving starter duties (unless next year is a total writeoff).

If we don't have a new starter in net for 2017 I don't think I'll be the only disappointed Flames fan. We can't run with that tandem with with Gillies and McDonald in our prospect pool. If Treliving can't trade for a new goalie I would try and sign a goalie to another short term Hiller-like deal. Ward, Khudobin, Enroth, Raanta, Talbot, Stalock, and maybe Reimer are all goalies I would look at depending on how the season goes. Not the best of options, but we know what to expect with Ortio/Ramo; at least some of those goalies could be an improvement.

Johnny Gaudreau (Previous contract: ELC) - RFA - Age 21 Resigned with the Flames: Deal of 6-8 years with AAV, $5-8 million

Sean Monahan (Previous contract: ELC) - RFA - Age 20 Deal of 6-8 years with AAV, $5-8 million

Jiri Hudler (Previous contract: 4 years, 16 million) - UFA - Age 31 Will not return as a Flame.

Kris Russell (Previous contract: 2 years, 5.2 million) - UFA - Age 28 Will not return as a Flame. Can be replaced with Kulak, Nakladal (if he returns)

David Jones (Previous contract: 4 years, 16 million) - UFA - Age 30 Will not return as a Flame.

Josh Jooris (Previous contract: 1 year, 0.975 million) - RFA - Age 24 Resigned with the Flames: Bridge contract deal for 1-3 years with AAV, $1-2 million

Karri Ramo (Previous contract: 1 year, 3.8 million) - UFA - Age 28 This one remains questionable. Should he continue his play of the last few games, he will be resigned for two years. If not, there are better options in the market or manegment decides to let roll with Ortio/X

Jonas Hiller (Previous contract: 2 years, 9 million) - UFA - Age 33 Will not return as a Flame.

Joni Ortio (Previous contract: 2 years, 1.2 million) - RFA - Age 24 Will return as a Flame with a bridge deal of 1-2 years with AAV, $1-2.5 million. Similar to his current contract. Should he be given a chance to start as a backup this year and fail, I doubt the Flames choose to resign him.

Joe Colborne (Previous contract: 2 years. 1.2 million) - RFA - Age 25 Resigned with the Flames: Bridge contract deal for 1-3 years with AAV, $1-3 million

(Other expiring deals include those for Derek Grant, Markus Granlund, Jakub Nakladal, Kenny Agostino, Tyler Wotherspoon, Bryce van Brabant, Drew Shore, Bill Arnold, Freddie Hamilton, Turner Elson, and Kevin Poulin).

This leaves the 2017-18 season as,

Gaudreau-Monahan-X
Bennett-Backlund-Frolik
Colborne-Stajan-X
Ferland-Grant-Bollig/Raymond

Giordano-Brodie
X-Hamilton
Engelland/Smid-Wideman

I think you've gotta have Granlund in there somewhere. So arguably that 3rd line RW, or push grant out and let Granlund center that line.

Elson haters? The guys has come so far and wears a letter in Stockton. He will be re-signed and sshould be re-signed.

Gaudreau, Monahan, Colborne and maybe Jooris from the main team. Sell the rest for picks or whatever you can get. Trade Backlund/Bollig too.

Everyone in the A comes back.

Gaudreau-Monahan-?
?-Bennett-Frolik
Bouma-Stajan-Colborne
Ferland-Grant-Arnold/Jooris/Hathaway/Agostino/Granlund

Brodie-Hamilton
Gio-?
Kulak/Nakladal/Engelland/Smid

True, if we move enough players at the NHL level, so a couple of guys graduate, happy to have Elson at the AHL level. Janko and a couple of others are going to start crowding their way into the AHL next year, so a lot depends on movement on the roster. Of which I hope there is a lot.

Core Pieces (won't trade): Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Brodie, Hamilton

Secondary pieces that are here for a while but aren't off limits but also want to keep: Gio, Backlund, Bouma, Frolik

Secondary pieces that I'd like to retain: Ferland, Colborne, Jooris, Russell, Ortio

Don't care to keep long term: Wideman, Stajan, Engelland, Smid, Bollig

Don't want on team next year: Raymond, Hiller, Ramo

Would re-sign for short-term, right priced, deal: Hudler, Jones

Prospects that I wouldn't trade: Gillies, MacDonald, Anderson, Kylington, Hickey, Jankowski

I'd re-sign the rest of the prospects.

I really think its time to sell high on johnny gaudreau. He is too small, a light breeze would blow him over, if he had been in town yesterday when it was so gusty he'd probably have bounced all the way to manitoba like tumbleweed. His longevity in this league is highly questionable playing at that size and if Brad Trellving has any smarts he would dish him for some heavier guys like Backes or Chris Stewart while his value is at its highest.

You're missing Bouma...and it's likely Grandlund makes the team, too... I imagine Poirier is a possibility, as well.

I think the 3rd line would be

Bouma - Stajan - Colborne

Team will need a 1st line RW, for sure
