Flames Notes from Nov 6 Practice: Ferland "Close" UPD: Ferland will join team on road trip

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
#Flames Micheal Ferland is on the ice with his teammates for practice. I was told yesterday that he's "close"

Good. Need someone with the ability to mix it up physically and skate hard up and down the ice. Not that he was amazing before he was injured, but missing both him and bouma makes the lineup much less physical.

He left a lot to be desired before his injury. Hopefully he did a lot of homework while he was on the shelf and can come back and contribute.

For the role he plays, I hope Ferland isn't made of glass.

Even Bollig on his best day is a downgrade on Ferland on his worst day.

Ferland over Bollig any day of the week.

Not sure I see that as a demotion so much as an assignment. Grant & Jooris played with a ton of energy yesterday and Bennett has been playing well at that same level. They likely want a line thats hard to handle.

What interests me is Raymond drawing in (by the looks of it). With a full roster almost healthy once Ferland returns, and with Grant playing well this has to be Raymond's last chance to save his NHL job as he's still cleared waivers if I'm not mistaken.

Ferland needs to play with the controlled fury that he played with against Vancouver in the playoffs. That has to be his game. He needs to be right on the edge.

Hartley is clearly trying to build some balanced lines to keep the puck OUT of the net as a priority.

Which is smart.

Johny - Bennett - Ferlund

On paper looks great and would I love to see it tried out.
Teams have become more comfortable taking liberties on Johny. Whether it is playing the body (clean hits) or slashes, he seems to always bounce back.
We saw Bennett come flying to Johny's aid a few games back... and it is not like Ferlund can't elevate his game. We saw last year that he has the ability to elevate his game to those who he is paired with.

Ferland wasn't playing at an NHL level before he got hurt.

Ugh do not like seeing Bennett on the wing and not a big fan of that "2nd line" of Frolik-Backlund-Jones.

Really happy to see Grant in the line-up.

Had a great series against the Canucks but outside of that he's a fringe NHL player. He seems to be the exception of earning a spot.
