Wideman and Russell's names on the trade market
slow news day, and no big surprise but all the major NHL insiders are now reporting it:
Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
LeBrun: I do think, from my info, other teams have phoned #Flames to see if they'd move a Wideman or a Russell. Those are names out there.
Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
LeBrun: Yes, he's talked to teams. Yes, he's interested in making a trade. But he's not going to do one for the sake of it. #Flames
McKenzie, Dreger and Friedman have said very similar
update:
Insider Trading:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider-trading~736500
McKenzie claims Wideman is the most likely tradebait and the Flames would prefer not to move Russell and re-sign him.
Claims a lot of teams have interest in Russell.

Don't think it matters at this point. We need a top 6 forward now and feel either can get that.

Not about who I would rather trade, it's about who or what is the return. Trade for the sake of a trade is dumb.

Bad time to trade either. Their trade value has plummeted, so the return will be underwhelming.

Would rather trade Wideman, as he likely returns the most.

Negative trade value? Thats an overstatement, especially when you consider the fact that we could retain some salary (Wideman).
GM's aren't that short sighted that they value a player completely based on their last 8 games.
Ahhhhh ninja edit. Never mind the first part of my comment

Retaining salary on Wideman gets the biggest return of the two, so I pick him. I don't see him ever repeating his production last season and I doubt he is in the clubs long term plans, so may as well try and cash in on whatever value he has left. Wideman at 5.2 scares teams, but at 3.5 seems a lot more viable.

Maybe they can be packaged with a decent prospect, like a Poirier or a Klimchuk, to get a solid asset back.

Regressive season. Strip it down, get the best packages available for them both.

I think Wideman holds pretty good value right now. Hartley was comfortable enough to give him top line minutes and he hasn't looked out of place. Also is putting up points and shots this season despite how poorly the team is doing.

Never good to be trading from a position of desperation.

I think both have alot of value still. Especially with teams looking to round out a top 4. They're both still coming off career years and Russell is still blocking a boat load of shots.
That said, I wouldn't move either until Brodie is ready and in game shape.
Nothing wrong with putting their names out there though.
Wideman has an NMC though so it will limit a return based on where he is willing to go, if anywhere.
But this team needs... Someone who can improve our possession time in the O-zone..

I know the coolest thing on this board lately is to hate on Russell, but Wideman has been worse in my opinion.
When you take the scoring away you're not left with much positive.
He's horrible in his own zone, and is probably the slowest player on the team.
I would bet he was one of the last Flames players in fitness testing.

D) Don't trade either unless you can extract maximum value.
I don't want to see us Tony Lydman this.

I like Wideman a lot but when Brodie gets back he becomes #5, some might argue #4 but with the RH/LH thing he probably plays 3rd pairing. We can't afford to pay 5M+ for our #4 or #5 guy so I choose him.

GMs were certainly that short sighted when it came to Cammy's 10 or 15 games before the trade deadline..

UFA that was struggling after a return from a concussion would probably have been the bigger concern there.
For me if I have to trade one right now it's probably Russell. Like the guy as a player but I feel like he probably gets the better return due to age and contract status. Plus the team just needs to get a little bigger and stronger on the blueline and he is a part of that.
