Default Cecil Hotel

Demolition of notorious Cecil Hotel starts this week

http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...arts-this-week

Calgary's 'epicentre' of evil, death and darkness may soon become a frightening piece of the past

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/ca...h-and-darkness

In its final year of operation, police were called 1,700 times. Weeks after its bar licence was revoked, calls to the area dropped by 91%.

“When I bought the place, the women were worse than the men,” Leo Silberman told the Calgary Herald before he passed away in 2007. “They fight like heck every day. Very, very rough.”

Share your Cecil Hotel memories here. I may write a song about it - "Eulogy For The Cecil Hotel". Weakerthans style.

I will try and dig up old Cecil Hotel stories I told here before.

Reddit Memories:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/com...oryexperience/

"saw a guy with a knife stabbed into his ass cheek"

"guy singing a Motorhead song in exchange for a small glass of beer"

"seeing a guy stumbling to the Cecil...beer in hand in an undershirt. Rephrase that...wearing ONLY the undershirt"

"the first place I was mugged"

"bikers started giving his friend a hard time about being bald"

Good times in the 1980s:

A "lady" spat in my face because I declined her tempting offer to dance (yes, there is a dance floor there - sometimes bands). She later followed me into the men's room to watch me pee.

One night we witnessed a wedding reception there. True story. The happy couple actually met at the Cecil, and thought it would be romantic to celebrate their marriage at the glamorous Cecil Hotel. The parents of the bride and groom were absolutely mortified. I wonder if they stayed in the Honeymoon Suite?

Another time a woman in perhaps her 50s was passed-out on the dance floor. Two or three songs later (no one bothered to help her up) she incredibly got back on her feet, and carried on dancing. We referred to that as the "TSN Turning Point".

A gentleman asked my male friend to dance one night. I don't think the man was gay; he was just too drunk too know if he was speaking to men or women.

There was a sign behind the bar reminding guests to "check their knives".

Why did we go there? Cheapest pitchers of beer in the city.

The Cecil may have died, but the CanHo lives on!

Why are hotels and establishments named Cecil so notorious?

The Cecil Hotel is LA is also historically wrought with evil.

The Cecil in Vancouver is a scum hole as well.

I was driving by but stopped at a light beside there. Some guy walked up and opened my door. I kept pushing it open with my feet and that sent him flying. I learned to drive with my door locked after that.

I went to the Cecil a few times when I was in my early 20's, what a dump. It was almost a given that someone would challenge you to a fight on any given night. Had to be careful not to step on someone passed out on the sidewalk out front.

About 15 years ago? I was invited to go on a pub crawl being held by an oil company, can't remember which one, think it was Amoco.

We started off at a nice bar on 8th avenue, think it was Penguin Pub and worked our way East. After 2 or 3 stops we ended up at the King Eddy, then the Regis and the Calgarian. The next stop was the Cecil .... at that point I got off the bus and grabbed a cab home.

After reading the Uber thread, it sounds like you would have been better off at the Cecil, instead of in a cab. I'm amazed you survived.

I have good memories of that place. Well to be fair I was extremely drunk but I did wake up the next morning without any injuries so I'm gonna assume it was a great place to kick back.

4 litre jugs of beer at that liquor store behind the Cec FTW!

One day we donated one to some hurtin' guy hanging around there. He was absolutely dumbstruck at our generosity. It was nice.

Only went to the Cecil a couple of dozen times, but every time was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. "Going to the Cecil" was always an event. Sad to see it go.

It was an establishment that always delivered.

If you were going to the Cecil, things were going down.

A man tried to stab me with what he claimed was an AIDS infected needle one time. It happens.
