Default Kitchen Sink Leak - Warped counter top

So I was sitting at my island in my kitchen tonight and noticed that my kitchen counter was warped and no longer flush with the sink. Looks like the hose attached to my kitchen sink was leaking causing the particle board to expand. Looks like there is also some damage underneath the sink in the cabinet

Two questions I was hoping people could help with. The first is whether or not this is something I should put through my home insurance, and the second is this something that is even fixable? I'm assuming not, and the damage is already done. I'd insert a picture if I knew how. I'm the farthest thing from a handyman there could be.

I guess that also leads to a third question, anyone have good experience with countertop guys they could recommend?

Could one of the mods move this to the off topic forum? It accidentally ended up here.

Thanks

Need a picture to tell if repairable.

Worth a call to insurance; doesn't cost anything to ask, likely if particleboard then no way near worth deductible.

re: countertop guys, depends if you're going stone or more particleboard.

Would a bigger sink fix it? Like maybe the cut out for the bigger sink would take out the warped part. If not, time for a new counter. Actually, the new counter will lead to a new backsplash, which will mean you might as well paint to match and that means you should upgrade to five inch baseboards and if you do that you should do the window trims as well and if you do that you should replace the leaky window which means you might as well upgrade the exterior. So if I were you I'd just tear the place down now and save yourself the stress.

You haven't quite said how bad the warping is - but in general, once particleboard is warped - it's never going back to it's original state. It may flatten out a bit when it dries so give it a week before contemplating anything,.

Insurance? Not worth it. Not sure what your deductible is but I suspect it will be a lot. The call is free of course, so it's your decision.

I suspect your bigger decision will be whether the warping is bothersome enough that you can live with it and for how long....

I the fawcet is shot and my worry is the particle board is so shot calling a plumber is useless because they will just tell me that they can replace the fawcet into the damaged particle board. Maybe better off us replacing everything

Totally agree. I do that at least once a year. Stupid smoke alarm battery keeps dying, and that leads to...stuff.

You sound like my wife who sees this as nothing but an opportunity to upgrade.

I think the short term action is to get the fawcet fixed. Will worry about counter damage after that. Anyone with recommendations for a plumber?

we had a problem with our countertop warping ours was right on the front so it was easy to get at but we used a board and clamped it down with 4 clamps and every day we would tighten the clamp a little bit more probably for about 3-4 weeks fixed the countertop you cant even see where it warped anymore

Is the hose leaking or just not screwed in properly/tight enough. First thing I'd do is disconnect the water and check for that. Maybe remove and then re-attach the hose. Even if the part is broken, you should be able to find a replacement at home depot. I recently replaced a sink intake and drainage in my rental unit. It's a fairly easy process. As long as you don't have to dig into a wall or structure to do it, I'd at least try it yourself. However, the bonus to getting a properly certified plumber is that you have someone to sue if things go wrong.

Unfortunately, sink hoses are a piece that builders often skimp on, but can lead to massive devastation. The hose into our upstairs (3rd floor) bathroom ruptured and flooded our entire house while we were gone for work. It would have been much worse, but our neighbours noticed water leaking out of our exterior siding and were able to shut our water off.

As for your counter, it's unlikely to go back to it's original shape. You can try to flatten it out before it dries.

Get a new counter top. Screw it in. Cut hole. Mount sink.

I like the idea of a larger sink, depending on how extensive the warpage is. I just replaced one for a client and had to cut the hole about an inch bigger all around just to fit the new sink, and the flange on the sink covered a larger area still.

They got the sink at Costco, a nice stainless unit that could be mounted above or beolw the counter.

If you can't do it yourself though you're probably looking well over $1000 for a sink, faucet and installation.

Insurance should cover the counter, but they won't cover the sink or faucet, so it won't be worth adding a claim to your insurance.
