Botched circumcision on Ontario newborn

TORONTO — An Ontario doctor has been cautioned after a 22-day-old baby bled to death from a circumcision gone horribly wrong, underscoring the heated debate over a simple yet contentious procedure.

Quote:
They say they did not even want the newborn circumcised — a view in line with longstanding recommendations from the Canadian Pediatric Society — but were persuaded to do so by a family physician.

I know this is the "off-topic" forum. But do we really need to debate/discuss this on a hockey forum?

Terrible tragedy. No reason to keep up this practice that has some pretty marginal benefits and some big downsides.
Roll up the rim to win and a quick clean and you're golden.

Right, but I'd say an even greater percentage of CPers are people who are of the age where they will be having children; or even grandchildren. It is something that can be discussed in a "matter of fact" manor without the need for being gross or sexual.
If nobody wants to discuss it, the thread will fall of the top of the page soon enough.

Dudes...and parents.
Besides, the subject matter is right there in the thread title.

Teach your kid how to clean it and leave it where it is. Barbaric tradition.

I'm quite surprised it happened at North York General. It's one of the best hospitals in Canada for delivery. It also happens to be the hospital where we are going to be delivering our baby boy early next year

This story made me genuinely sad.
While I don't believe in this practice, as I was reading this story, I could only imagine the pain and heartbreak the parents of this child were going through seeing their little boy perish before them. I kept envisioning my wife and I going through that if our son were in the same situation. Reading about the little boy being easy and quiet and happy in general, is exactly how I'd describe my son.
As I kept reading that article, my gut twisted more and more... This is terrible. Condolences to the parents and family.

Someone should probably start a hotline to report these kind of practices.

It's also a tradition with health benefits.
Quote:
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. However, the AAP doesn't recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns. The AAP leaves the circumcision decision up to parents — and supports use of anesthetics for infants who have the procedure.
Circumcision might have various health benefits, including:
Easier hygiene. Circumcision makes it simpler to wash the penis. Washing beneath the foreskin of an uncircumcised penis is generally easy, however.
Decreased risk of urinary tract infections. The overall risk of urinary tract infections in males is low, but these infections are more common in uncircumcised males. Severe infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later on.
Decreased risk of sexually transmitted infections. Circumcised men might have a lower risk of certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Still, safe sexual practices remain essential.
Prevention of penile problems. Occasionally, the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis can be difficult or impossible to retract (phimosis). This can lead to inflammation of the foreskin or head of the penis.
Decreased risk of penile cancer. Although cancer of the penis is rare, it's less common in circumcised men. In addition, cervical cancer is less common in the female sexual partners of circumcised men.

And apparently it can also be fatal.

The word "might" is a very strong word in that context. It could mean anything.
I might be an alien.
If the AAP believes the benefits outweigh the risk, why don't they recommend it for all male new-borns?

Was the ancient religious practice instituted to make it harder for a male to masturbate since you kinda need lube if circumcised?

You know, I cant remember if it was part of a larger discussion, and it sounds like something Textcritic would say, but I recall a discussion about Ancient Religious Rules and circumcision being singled out specifically.
I understand that its symbolic of their Covenant with God, but it was pointed out to me that sometimes 'God' had a habit of getting people to do things they otherwise wouldnt that suited the circumstances.
Circumcision for instance. Most guys arent going to take a knife to their manhood all that willingly, hell in this day and age of precision manscaping tools thats still a sketchy affair.
However when you're in the situation the Jews were in, meandering about the desert for 40 years with limited access to water and medical supplies you could risk infections and various other complications in maintaining a healthy population and population level.
So one day 'God' decided that maybe he 'needs for them to do this' for 'reasons' and voila! All the makings of TRADITION practically sung at the top of his lungs by Trevya himself.
However, in a modern society we have access to all of the conveniences to keep it clean despite all of the marginal and scientifically dubious 'health benefits.'
Remember people, we were made 'in God's image' we probably shouldnt have to cut pieces of ourselves off in order to fit.
