Friedman: Flames could give up a decent defenseman
Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
Friedman: Team to watch (on the trade front) could be #Flames, since they could give up a decent defenseman.
Guessing Friedman means Russell or Wideman

Could see them looking to move Wideman for a forward.
At 2-years 5.25 million his remaining contract isn't that bad.
They would probably prefer to move Smid or Engelland though, not sure those contracts are as moveable though.

Columbus is looking for some defence, I wonder who we could get from them that would help with our top 6.

I think if it comes down to Russell vs Wideman we're better served keeping Dennis and recouping something for Russell while he still has good value. Plus, it seems easier to find good LHD than RHD.

If the rumours in the other thread are true Columbus has been dangling Rychel for a defenseman..
6"1 205 lb left winger, former 2013 19th overall pick. Produced well at the pro level so far. Could he switch to right side?

I think it's a great idea if it brings back a good young forward or high pick.
May Kickstart the team as well

Columbus is looking for a defenceman who can keep the puck out of their net and keep opposing forward honest. Don't see how Russell or Wideman fit the bill.

Russell was part of the Columbus organization already, so it might be a little unlikely, but different management group, I suppose.
I am not sure what type of asset we could get back that would make us better (this year), unless we really think Kulak/Smid can hold their own.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

The NHL shot-blocking leader doesn't help keep the puck out of the net?

Aren't Davidson and crew huge proponents of advanced stats? Would they really want Wideman or Russell?

Rumours had Columbus willing to move Kerby Rychel earlier this year. --> fata'd by GreenLantern
Today, the Blue Jackets have $2,634,525 in available cap-space, so it would be interesting to see what sort of deal could be worked out.

The Flames have 7 defencemen under contract making at least $2.6M per year, with 4 over $4M. Plus, Nakladal looks like he's too good to be stuck in the AHL.
It would be very surprising if Treliving wasn't shopping one or two of them.
Columbus is surprisingly close to the cap, so any trade with them would likely require either retaining salary or taking a sizeable amount of cap space back.
