Default Friedman: Kings offered 2 or 3 prospects to Flames to take Richards before arrest

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...ds-settlement/

Quote:
1. Richards’ next court date is Dec. 8, so his future remains unclear. But he is an unrestricted free agent, and there is interest. He doesn’t turn 31 until February and it was his contract — not his play — that prevented other clubs from taking him. It’s believed the Kings were offering two or three prospects (Jordan Weal likely among them) to the Calgary Flames and/or Edmonton Oilers as incentive to acquire him before the arrest. Richards will have suitors should the time come.

I suppose we dodged a bullet in a way as Richards' cap hit would not have been too easy to deal with taking on Dougie Hamilton also. Although Weal looks like a decent prospect to say the least.

I'd give Richards a try, but never at that dollar figure on his old contract.

Haven't followed the story completely, but I believe he is FA now? If so, He's still capable, and I'd take a shot at him on a 1 year deal.

We have too many forwards as it is, who would you replace him with?

It isn't the cap hit that worries me about Richards, it is the alleged extracurricular activities at that bothers me.

He doesn't appear to be the type of individual you want in a young room.

With his off ice issues and massive decline in play, I'd rather Treliving not waste a roster spot on him.

I'd want him to prove he's off Oxycontin first.

Just unbelievable what's happened to this guy. Was just 5 years ago where he basically willed the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final with his gritty play and leadership, and he's still only 31. Tragic

From an off-ice perspective why would you want the headaches and the possible negative influence? From an on-ice perspective, he's slow and would probably have a hard time fitting into the Flames speed game. It may have made sense to get some good prospects in order to take his contract, but that's no longer the case. Big pass.

I'm really happy that the "we take on a bad contract for additional assets" type of deals never happened. The Flames will have cap woes in a couple of years anyway, no need to further add to those by taking on an albatross.

On this team, he'd slot as a 4th line centre at best, and he's not better than Stajan in that role.

I wonder if it was before or after the Lucic trade.

If I was BT and they offered Colin Miller I'd be all over it. I'm very high on him, think he'll be a stud.

Yup major blessing in disguise. The Flames rebuilt far quicker than anyone (including management) expected and if they had a bunch of deadweight on the roster we would not have had the space to bring in Dougie and Frolik this summer

Honestly curious: Drugs, concussions, or hard playing style taking a toll? So hard to know

He can be Seto 2.0, but with a better pedigree. Sometimes players need a refresh or a restart and can rekindle some magic of old. There's help out there for guys with substance problems.

Possible replacement candidates could be Bollig or Raymond, or he can pinch hit #4C if Stajan or Backs gets injured. Ultimately though, he needs to play his way on to the team. Brad signs him, and Bob decides if he is good enough to replace anyone on the team or if he just gets scratched or sent to the minors.

Mix of all of them plus poor conditioning. Plays physical, but doesn't take care of himself so his physical shape is probably absolute crap. I would rather have Glencross.

I'm gonna go with "all of the above".

It's really too bad. As recently as 2014 he was a pretty good NHL player.

2 or 3 prospects might be enticing, especially if someone like Raymond was going the other way.

It is good BT is in the middle of things, but glad it worked out the way it did, with Hamilton, Frolik and some good prospects still in the fold.

Yea, if the Richards trade had happened, Hamilton and Frolik to the Flames probably wouldn't have.
