Great game story Gary
Thought was funny when Sutter was interviewed after talking about a bad final 15 minutes or something, when really it was a bad first and last 20 for Vancouver and a single period that found them two goals and a point in this one.
My biggest fear going into this season was the top lines performance in that Vancouver series last year. Had they been figured out? Or were they hurt?
Answer: Hurt

Monahan's 200 ft game was on display all season last year. But I always felt that the offense was generated primarily from the other two.
But Monahan seems to have a bit more explosive speed this year and seems to be the genesis more often.
There is no question that Gaudreau is the catalyst and is an incredibly dynamic player. And Hudler is Hudler.
But I am really liking what I have seen from Monahan so far.

Very good write-up! Good job.
I felt like Calgary's bottom 9 forwards were way more impactful last night, especially the second line. Raymond Bennett and Frolik were very aggressive and stretched the D with their speed. If Raymond can keep playing like that, and when Bennett and Frolik both settle in, this team could have strong secondary scoring.
The defense were much smarter with their passes and aggression this game. Hamilton did the "blindly throw the puck up the boards" play less tonight, he's starting to settle in. Love the celebration on the goal too. Can't believe he's only 21. Engelland and Kulak were very steady for the Flames. Love how Wideman can go from goat to hero with 1 play. It took him a little bit to wake up last year too. He'll get his play back up to standard in no time.
Love how calm Hiller is in the net. Ramo may have higher highs, but he also has lower lows and he seems to be all over the place in the net. Makes me nervous. Hiller is very calm and plays the angles very well. I wonder if that calmness helps ease the rest of the team and allows them to play "their game" a little easier. Should be an interesting battle in the next over the next little while.

What I noticed most from Monahan last night is his incredible stick play. He isn't very physical but he stripped more pucks from Canuck players than anyone on the team.

Agreed.
Monahan seemed like the defensive conscious and the "shooter" with two skilled guys that were making everything happen.
This season so far (early) he seems to be stirring the drink himself now too.
Can't wait for Bennett to pop his first of the season and get going. Flames will be tough to contain.

Maybe I'm on an island here, but IMO the best part of that game was that the Canucks actually played very well and the Flames still prevailed.
Perhaps that was due to the missing Edler (who clearly is their best Dman by a mile)but that has to be an encouraging sign moving forward.

Has anyone noticed the mean streak Hudler has going so far this season?
The matching minor with Dorsett was the obvious one, but he's jawing with guys constantly, went after Sedin with some leather to face after a whistle. Seems to play with a chip constantly on his shoulder. I noticed it a bit in game 1 too.
Angry Hudler is good Hudler?
Maybe he wants to undo his Lady Byng reputation?

Noticed it and absolutely love it.
He doesn't look happy about to liberties teams took against him last year (the Regehr cross-check comes to mind) and instead of shying away, Hulder looks like he is more than willing to battle for every inch of ice.

You'd think for his lack of size that he wouldn't be great on a line with Gaudreau, but it's the opposite. He's got the skill to keep up and he doesn't take crap from anyone. He'll shove back instead of drift away like many other smaller skilled players would do.
Where would the Flames be without this FA signing? Would Gaudreau and Monahan have made such a seamless transition to the NHL without him? I'm thinking not likely.

Hudler is such a smart player and has a deceptively quick shot. It has to be one of the best free agent signings in Flames franchise history.

I don't understand how that was ever a concern... they (Hudler and Monahan) were noted as being hurt by those around the team, they looked hurt, and still blew the doors off the Canucks in the game 6 elimination game. With Gaudreau putting up 9 points in 11 playoff games, it seemed academic.
Either way, they've come flying out of the gate this season and still look like one of the best lines in the league. The chemistry is unreal.

It was always 3-way chemistry. Monhan's finishing abilities have been on display since he started, and those hands speak for themselves.
That quick shift / roof last night was a thing of beauty. He has always had that ability to get a quick deadly shot off and it's been a staple of that line's success since it was put together.
Can't wait to see how good they can be this year with more experience and confidence.

You HAVE to have vets that can lead the way and teach the young'uns how to play in the NHL.
And not Ference-and-Hendriks vets, you need good vets. You need players like Hudler and Giordano. They make the young players better.

Hudler definitely got to Dorsett. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but his facial expressions when they were jawing in the box was priceless. Dorsett was loosing it. He was standing in the box screaming at Hudler, while Juri just chilled.
