Default Thoughts on the offseason?

In my mind, I take this as one of the best off seasons Calgary has had. What do you guys think?

- Bragging rights in defeating rival Vancouver Canucks in round one.

- Jiri Hudler & Bob Hartley winning trophies at the NHL Awards.

- Hudler stealing the show with his 'no shoes' speech.

- Treliving & Co stealing the show at the draft with acquisitions of Dougie Hamilton

- Signing Michael Frolik from FA for much needed depth

- Signing both contracts to very good AAV & term

- Signing our RFA & creating depth for competition for training camp.

- Hearing that we can expect some news of the arena mega-project soon.

- Signing Gio & Ferland which are both believed to be soon.

If I forgot anything let me know! This was a good offseason and too many to think of.

aside from the Hamilton signing, the best thing about this off season was the absence of the "Why did you do that?" signing. The Setoguchi's or the Scott Hannan's- players that were available in August for a reason, and just took up a contract spot and blocked a prospect

I didn't realize that a Gio signing was immanent.

It's been a great offseason for sure, but not sure about your last bullet.

- how do you know these have happened just not announced
- the Ferland signing is about as automatic as it gets (when it occurs) so I doubt it will be list worthy
- as for Gio, there is no doubt his value to the team, but unless the Flames somehow get him to go 4 years or less, or unless Gio is willing to take a less than market AAV over a long term, I'm pretty skeptical that deal will be one that doesn't hurt us more than help us long term.

Darren Haynes wrote a fantastic article about Gio and his new contract. Well worth the read.

Drafting Kylington that late was pretty sweet too.

Agreee the off season seems to be taking forever. Interesting year coming up. I am fortunate enough to have tickets to the Penticition young stars so I think that will be a spectacle this year, with McJesus and all.

It's been so bad I've been checking any and every website for hockey news, I've even resorted to HFBoards. It's been horrendous.
Please someone help me!!!.
I need new games on TV with highlights at night to put me to sleep.

Funny this has been a long offseason even though the team played a month longer this year. I think it is just because I am anti prong this year far more than seasons past. Say the NHL.com preview for the Flames this morning and like all of the other summer chat the experts predict we make the playoffs.

Getting Dougie was so massive it can't be understated. The Flames have 2 young elite center/prospects in Monahan and Bennett. Gaudreau proved to me the real deal as a dynamic offensive winger. The missing piece was a stud all around Dman in that same 18-22 age group. For Teelving to add the pkayer who I think is the best fit of any of the young blue liners in the league is simply a massive win. Doing so without giving up a top prospect or young core player is robbery.

Frolik was a nice add as well but getting Dougie and signing him to a big contract is what has made this offseason so great and has me excited for next year. The additions to the team have eliminated fears of regression and have me feeling confident we are watching the continuation of a franchise rebuilding from the Iggy/Kipper era into a legit perennial cup threat 3 years quicker than I imagined

I think the off-season has been great. However, I would still like to see some of the extra bodies being moved, albeit it might be tough to trade some guys. Once we "trim the fat", I think this would be an almost perfect off-season.

I can't wait for this offseason to be over. I'm just way too excited about a full year of Sam Bennett and seeing Dougie Hamilton. This team only improved, so I can't wait to see where they go. I'm also interested in seeing who gets traded, as I feel there are too many warm bodies.

Interesting article, but clearly a lot of attempting to justify a long deal for Gio, that the Flames really have no choice but to sign.

Likely occurance if the Flames sign Gio beyond 3 years in the next extension (which they will) Gio will be under performing to his cap hit for each year after that point, getting worse each subsequent year beyond. In the last few years of an 8 year contract for Gio, it will be a huge anchor on this club, and if we sign that deal, we will really be putting our window for success for this group to be the next 5 years before Gio starts to under-perform in comparison to his cap hit, which will handcuff the team.

Don't get me wrong, we need Gio for the next 4 years, so we have no choice in the matter, it's just going to be tough after that point, but I guess that's a problem for years from now.

The count down to the Frolik contract "Why did you do that?" stage will be begin in seriousness when Hudler and Russell are having great seasons and on their way to being UFAs that the Flames have no cap room to sign.

Yeah for sure, there's literally no other contracts that BT could get rid of to make room. Pretty much have to wait for the Bollig, Stajan, Engelland, Raymond, Smid and Wideman contracts to expire. No other choice but to ride those puppies out. Damn you Frolick!!!!

To add to the problem, I heard that the agents for Jones, Hiller, Ramo and Colborne have blackmailed Treliving and they will each be signed to multi year extensions very soon.

We are screwed. Thanks a lot, Frolick!!!

He wasn't suggesting an 8 year deal

I'm not sure I fully buy the idea that since Gio wasn't playing in the NHL to start his career that somehow gives his body a big advantage. The career sweet spots wasn't exactly encouraging either. The late bloomer and fitness part I think makes sense. Injuries though are a bit of a concern to me. It's a tough decision but I fully trust Trelliving will weigh his options and make the right decision for the team.
