Default Buying a TV v20231

Hey there CP,

So I'm buying a new Tv and need some advice. I generally speaking don't game as much as I used to but I still like to play FIFA NHL and GTA here and there. Most of my viewing is movies, tv, and mostly sports. So with that in mind (and LED cuz I like brightness and I know I suck cuz plasma is better) can people recommend to me a TV they've picked up recently?

I need 60" (tv TV will be about 8 to 10 feet away from everyone) and I'm open to Sony or Samsung the most. Thanks for any input

I'm looking at the Sony R550a models at the moment; if you don't need the 3d the Sony R220a might work. they come in 50, 60, and 70 inch models.

With the black Friday deals coming up it might be the best time before boxing day.

http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...-35561946.html

I'm looking at the w900a. It's supposed to have the best picture quality of the 2013 LED's and also be great for gaming. Trouble is it's only 55"... while the area I'll be getting this for isn't very huge I was kinda set on a 60. But if I'm 8 to 10 feet away a 55 is probably fine.

The other set I'm looking at is http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...-35566921.html

This TV is gorgeous in store and a full 60". Trouble is though the response time is over 40 MS, almost double the sony. I don't game a lot but I dont want to drop this kinda dough on a tv that will suck for games.

Never settle for something smaller. Bigger is better. Especially if you take the effort to wall mount it (which you should)

Where I'm putting the TV wall mounting isn't an option, as it's going against a stubwall by the main entrance. Bigger is better but if you sit close to the TV bigger will erode the quality of display, you can see pixels, etc.

I read some recent reviews of the 60" F8000 and some firmware updates by Samsung has cleared up some issues with it and people say it games well. Hard to make this call. I have the worst buyers remorse on the planet.

I have a Samsung 8000 series and it is incredible- Very pricey, but well worth it imo.

What size screen? Do you ever play games on it?

I have a Samsung F8000 65" TV. Great picture, and great for games - the firmaware updates made the input lag next to nothing. I use it pretty evenly for gaming, watching movies, and watching TV. I got my Samsung for $3,000, whihc is about $1,000 off the regular price.

The Sony W900A is a great TV - I recommended it to Fire in another thread, you should ask him about it when he receives it. He got it for $1,950, so there are deals to be had.\

EDIT: I also game in regular picture modes - I don't have issues with lag, and have no need to bump it into PC Mode/Game Mode. Only difference I noticed when bumping it into the other modes was that it bumps the picture detail down.

Thanks! This was the only thing I was worried about

I got the Sony W900A today and it does look great. I changed the display settings using some suggestions from the avsforum.com. I recommend the site for whichever TV you get. Haven't done much gaming except for a bit of GTA V (in game mode). It does seem a bit more responsive than my old TV but that could be all in my head.

+1 for Samsung f8500 best tv I have ever owned. No lag at all when I game movies and sports look great. A bit expensive but well worth it.

Plus it looks mighty fine with a sonos playbar and sub attached to it.

I purchased a Sony 800 series the other day at a size of 47 inches (the 900a's baby brother, as 55 is a tad big for me and that's its only size). The primary concern was input lag and the 802a has clocked in at the lowest value of any HDTV on the market (there's an "input lag database" on a website devoted just to exploring this trait of various displays).

I like both Samsung and Sony and am happy with this unit so far. If you go through Futureshop right now you can do a bundle with a Sony soundbar or some PS4 games, I believe (both the 900 and 800 are on sale). The 900 has a "triluminous display" and supposedly does a great plasma impression when it comes to blacks and colours, and its input lag is only a hair higher than that of the 800.

Figured I would bump this thread instead of creating me own. With Black Friday Deals right around the corner, I am looking at a couple different TV's.
I'm deciding between the 50" Sharp LED ($399.99), the 42" Sharp LED ($299.99) and the 40" Samsung ($397.99).
I'm curious what you guys think. Which is best bang for buck? Is there any other TV's out there that would be better in the same price range? Keep in mind I'm a student so the $399 is pretty much my max.

Returned the 60inch f8000. Beautiful looking TV but the gaming, especially on FIFA, suffered. Shadowing and input lag was quite noticable.

I got the Sony 55" 900a and it's gorgeous. Just as good if not better picture than the Samsung, and gaming is spot on. Really glad I got it too cuz from 9 feet away a 60 inch was just too big. Cant say enough good things about this tv so far.

How far away are you from the tv? Whats the main purpose of the tv going to be?

I'll be about 5-10 feet away. Used for mainly gaming and sometimes movies.

Min recommended distance on a 50" is 6 and a half feet away. Personally I'd figure out what size you want before you start comparing models.

Bumping this for some suggestions.

A friend at work is looking for a new TV and size is less important than budget.. she'd like to stay around $500 but could go north of that to $600-$700 if it's really good bang for the buck.

She's sitting about 6-8 ft away from it and says "50 inches just seems too big"... that being said she was looking at dirt cheap models with 60hz refresh rate that I recommended staying away from... however she's only watching movies/TV on it, no video games or sports so does refresh rate matter as much? Should she only be looking at 120hz or are there decent 60hz models out there?

Anyway looking for a few brand/model suggestions, I've been out of the game too long.

If there's one thing I've found with TVs, it's pretty hard to go too big. You definitely can go too small though. 50" should be a pretty good size for sitting 8 feet away.
