A little bit on the high side since hes not a surefire number 1 goalie yet. I'd pay him between 3-4 million

Good deal for a very good goalie on a not so good team.

I actually like Bernier. The Leafs are obviously not a contender so paying this kind of money for your number one gives you a lot of flexibility. Also makes him a very tradeable asset too.

Seems a bit high to me, but I'll admit I'm more familiar with the Leafs suckage, than Bernier's play.
I guess if Dion is your number one d-man, maybe your win% and other stats are going to suffer.

Really solid deal for the Leafs.
I hope they don't start making a habit of that.

if you would pay him up to 4, is that extra 150,000 really an issue?

If this guy is on a good team last year, he probably is making $1-1.5m more per year right now. Patrick Roy in his prime would look bad with that leaf team in front of him. I would love if we could acquire him to be our #1 until Gillies is ready, he is severely underrated and much better than Ramo or Hiller IMO.

Yeah Bernier would look good backstopping the Flames and would be an upgrade over the current tandem IMO. But cost to acquire him would be young talent and/or draft picks.
I believe he will be highly sought after this deadline or next.

4.15 is not the salary of a "Surefire #1 Goalie". It puts him 24th in goalie cap hits. His numbers put him higher than 24th.

Excellent signing for a rebuild. Worst case scenario he is really good trade bait.
From an asset standpoint this contract is almost like signing the option of acquiring a first round pick this year or next.

Put Bernier in net for the Ducks and maybe the WCF this year ends differently, IMHO. Lots of teams would love him at that price.

Help, save, whatever.
|
I feel this is an overpayment. Bernier has shown flashes of being better than average but he has never been able to put together a complete season. I know the Leafs are horrible, but Reimer has shown more than Bernier in my opinion. No way should he get so much more than Reimer.
At this point both are just very average goaltenders on a very bad team.

Bernier went to arbitration so it's no surprise he's making more than Reimer.
Also, while you can argue Reimer's proven more because he made the playoffs, he has been Bernier's backup the last two seasons. And Reimer has not looked very good for those 2 years.
I think people are missing the point 4.15 is indeed avg or even below avg salary in 2015.

Literally two people in this thread have said "bit on high" side. Rest have all said good deal. Not many here care about the Leafs, so you crying about your Leafs getting picked on here and there is useless.

And one of those people also said they could be wrong.
Still, 3rd in losses and 8th in goals against. 30th in save% which is probably the stat that has the least to do with the team (yes it is still affected by the play of the team, but as far as goalie stats go, it probably has the LEAST to do with the team compared to the other stats.)
Yeah the team and especially the defense is terribad but, ehhhhh. Guess I have bad memories of the Flames taking good players off bad teams. There's no guarantee they are even better on better teams.

Bernier is clearly better than Reimer.
But he hasn't achieved top-level status yet, IMO. So this contract sounds about right - paid as a 1A, but not an elite #1.
I would rather have Bernier than Hiller at similar dollars.
