Default Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics

http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/31/sport/...-2022-choices/

In 2022, Beijing, China will become the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Today, the IOC announced Beijing will host its second Olympics of the 21st Century, 14 years after hosting the 2008 Summer Games.

Between the 2018 Winter Games in Korea; the 2020 Summer Games in Japan; and the 2022 Winter Games in China, three straight Olympics will be held in Eastern Asia.

Beijing defeated Almaty, Kazakhstan in a single vote of 44-40. Almaty was the only other candidate city considered after all other potential bidders, including Krakow, Poland; Lviv, Ukraine; Stockholm, Sweden; and Oslo, Norway, dropped out of the bidding process.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Winter_Olympics

The 2022 Games will have a budget of $3.9 billion (USD), which is a fraction of 2008's $43 billion budget. The Bird's Nest Stadium will once again host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. A number of other 2008 venues will be re-used in 2022, including the Water Cube being used as the Curling venue. All indoor events will be held in Beijing itself. The outdoor events will be held at one of two "Clusters". One is 90km from Beijing, the other is 220km away.

Cities are no longer lining up to host the Olympics, so it makes sense to 'recycle' a city if it can pull of a winter olympics, climate-wise, after it hosts the summer.

I was there for the summer games. Nice thing about a communist country you can easily dictate when people can and cannot drive. And where. Not to mention shutting down nearby factories and facilities.

None of this massive whining about one traffic lane in Toronto.

There were clear blue skies during the games . . . before and after? Not so much.

Ski events were held at Whistler, which does get snow. The venue for ski events in Beijing has virtually no snow.

Based on 2008, I figure the Chinese can figure out a way to make it work

Better them than us. The Olympics are a massive unqualified Boondoggle from start to finish.

This will be good to further the rise of their already growing hockey population. That's a plus.

Not if the NHL isn't involved. I'm sure they're thrilled at the thought of two consecutive tournaments in asia.

On the bright side:

Calling any and all Canadian hockey players with Chinese ancestry, this is your time to shine for the Motherland.
