In 2022, Beijing, China will become the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Today, the IOC announced Beijing will host its second Olympics of the 21st Century, 14 years after hosting the 2008 Summer Games.
Between the 2018 Winter Games in Korea; the 2020 Summer Games in Japan; and the 2022 Winter Games in China, three straight Olympics will be held in Eastern Asia.
Beijing defeated Almaty, Kazakhstan in a single vote of 44-40. Almaty was the only other candidate city considered after all other potential bidders, including Krakow, Poland; Lviv, Ukraine; Stockholm, Sweden; and Oslo, Norway, dropped out of the bidding process.

The 2022 Games will have a budget of $3.9 billion (USD), which is a fraction of 2008's $43 billion budget. The Bird's Nest Stadium will once again host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. A number of other 2008 venues will be re-used in 2022, including the Water Cube being used as the Curling venue. All indoor events will be held in Beijing itself. The outdoor events will be held at one of two "Clusters". One is 90km from Beijing, the other is 220km away.
