Joni "Oreo" Ortio
Thought it would be an appropriate time to make a thread about Joni Ortio. Talk about a guy who has shown strong games and two shutouts in the past 7 games hes played at the NHL level.
Seriously can this guy be our next Kiprusoff at his peak? They are the same height and weight, both are from Finland and Ortio is trained by Kipper in the offseason.

I know in your innocence calling Ortio, Oreo seems cool but what calling someone an Oreo means is somewhat a racial epithet. It means you are black on the outside and white on the inside. I'd just avoid it's use as it's not fitting and not nice.

Here's even a spoof about it.

They also played for the same Finnish team over seas that Kipper now owns and Ortio is in the sam position as Kipper was in with the Sharks 3 goalie situation.

Didn't the nickname Oreo come about because a t.v pbp miss said his name?

Uh oh, "Oreo" is off limits now for political correctness?
Better off calling him "Hydrox" I guess to be safe:

People should refrain from calling him Oreo for the lone and simple reason that it sounds dumb.

Sure, but it came about the same way that "Jarmoe" did.
Besides, would you prefer "Orts"? Because that's what it will be.

If this kid is on waivers before the season starts, I'm going to break some windows.
I live in Vancouver, so this will only alarm people who know the Canucks aren't in the cup finals.

Disagree. The primary meaning of that word is a cookie. Yes, there is a well-known (but less used) "racial" meaning to the word, but as you said yourself, any racial tone to the word wouldn't even make sense here.
We can't and shouldn't just stop using every word that has ever been used as a slur against someone. If anything we should reclaim these types of words that are perfectly common and innocent by themselves. It's not like the word is going to just go away whether or not we use it. (Well, not as long as Oreos are sold anyway.)
If anything, using Oreo as a reference to something else lessens the impact of that words other meanings.

Let's not allow ourselves to succumb to a level of hyper sensitivity that inhibits our ability to use puns and enjoy harmless wordplay.
If Ortio were of mixed light/dark heritage and the nickname was being used as an attempt to degrade him, then by all means blow your whistle.
However.
If people decide to call Ortio Oreo because the names are really similar, and Oreos look like the 0 that Ortio posted on the game sheet tonight, and that he's a cookie-monster eating up would be goals and that makes you want to call him Oreo, well then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Context, people.

Johnny Hockey is insensitive too guys. It might offend people who might not be able to play hockey because they stepped on a landmine or something. Or are you insensitive towards the disabled?

Did you see the lineups on Thursday night? Not sure I would say that is NHL level competition.

Yes, let's never mention the word Oreo – the single most recognisable cookie brand in the world – because a small group of people use it to degrade each other. No one may ever use this word again.
This is double-reverse racism times 9, y'all.
