I was under the impression Larsson was basically a disappointment.

After their coach was fired he got an opportynity and ran with it. One of the better two-way dmen in the NHL.

Defence traditionally take longer to develop. Look how long it took victor Hedman to get to a conn symth caliber defence man. It will work out in nj's favour in the end

Good contact for a solid defenceman. I really wanted to pry him from The Devils if Gio left.

Great cap hit. Will be a top 10-15 dman in couple years, with potential to be even better.

How is this allowable under the CBA, with both the 19-20 and 20-21 being more than double the amount of the lowest contract year, 15-16?

That only applies to contracts where where the average of salary plus bonuses over the first half of the contract exceeds the cap hit (i.e. Front loaded)
If the salary breakdown was reversed, then yes the contract would be illegal.

Thanks, I just found the articles in the CBA that walked through this. It's interesting to me that the same rules don't apply whether or not the contract is front loaded. I learned something! On a Saturday!!
So as I understand it, because this contract is not front loaded:
- The maximum compensation for any one year of the deal is $5.5M (sum of year one and year two) (contract meets this requirement)
- The contract cannot increase year to year by more than $2.5M (lower of year one or year two) (contract meets this requirement)
- The contract cannot decrease year to year by more than $1.25M (lower of 50% of year one or 50% of year two) (contract meets this requirement)

Nope. He got shafted by their previous head coach Deboer.

I agree that Larsson is a real up and comer but he has really only had one full NHL season. Year before last he played more in the AHL than the NHL. Some of these guys are stepping into big money contracts awfully soon.

Yeah. He is quite decent already, but a little early to be calling him one of the better two-way D-men in the NHL right now.

4.1M/yr is less than #3 defenseman money. Locking him up on a 6 year term means at worse you're paying a guy just over #4 defenseman money to be a #4 defenseman, at best you're paying your #1 defenseman less than TJ Brodie money. It's a pretty safe gamble that could end up being a home run.

lol
How about we see more than half a season of decent play before we call him one of the best in the NHL.
He has all the tools and looks like he may be putting it all together, but that's a lot of money based on hope.
He was more of a bridge contract candidate IMO.
However, if he does blossom, NJ's gamble will pay off

He didn't call him one of the best, he said one of the better. Big difference.
