At a firsthand simplistic glance this looks like a bit of double standards from Georgia here.
Everything's fine when they want independance but when South Ossetia wants to become an an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation then things aren't so dandy.
Solution: Have an official internationally recognized referendum.

Isn't that the role of the UN? Sanctions? Peacekeepers?
Or .... If it was internationally recognized wouldn't that justify a Russian presence in that area? Wouldn't it justify them turning the gas off until compliance?
It's one thing saying that Russia has invaded, it's another thing when an unofficial referendum says that the people they've invaded aren't against it.

Bah, that whole area has been in turmoil for years. Is anyone else surprised? Chechnya, Nagarno-Karabakh, Ahbkazia, South Ossetia.....This place is a powder keg of violence. A big part of the problem is Russia's stubborn refusal to recognize that the entire Caucasus region are full of independent states; Soviet pride still lingers and is a constant theme throughout these conflicts.
Mind you, President Saakashvilli is extremely pro-Western and NATO oriented, so his country's platform is not making this struggle any easier.

Yeah, and it's one thing to say "Russia has invaded to secure what ever" and another to say "Russia has attacked a sovereign country to pick a piece of it for itself", be the reason what ever it may.
Not that anything is that simple. But starting wars is inherently bad.
Excellent timing anyway, because nobody will really care for at least as long as the olympic go on.

The UN isn't going to pick sides.
They're just going to tell everyone to quit killing each other.

Surely you aren't suggesting that a quasi-totalitarian regime would be using the Olympics as a political tool to distract from activities that would normally draw the scrutiny of the world? Well, at least the Olympic committee is smart enough not to allow the games to be hosted in region like the Caucasus, right? Right? Oh yeah, Sochi... Well, at least we can hope that the Olympic spirit in 2014 will bring peace to the region and a respect for human rights and dignity, much as it has in China.

As much as I am for what the Olympics represent and stand for, the summer Olympics just don't do it for me... I never get excited for them.
As for the attack, it was strategy, catch them at a moment when they are not paying attention. Disrespectful to us the Olympics as a diversion.

The best part of this is George Bush telling them to settle their differences peacefully through open dialogue and respectful communication.

There was a video game loosely based on this kind of thing happening. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. One of those games where you are in control of a bunch of special forces soldiers and you have to do missions. What was it? It's driving me nuts.
Set in South Ossetia and Moscow at one point. Not Rainbow Six but like that.

So will someone put a foot in Russia's ass allready?
I am serious. Us Americans were attacked by terriorist of al quiada which Saddam supported and gave money too. Saddam was a terriorist and the world is better for someone to have the balls to take him and Al quiada out. Now someone needs to kick russias ass.

And then there is the double standard from Russia.
One breakaway province needs to be crushed (Chechnya), while another needs to be supported (South Ossetia).
The hardest part of this entire conflict for the rest of the world will be to sort through all the BS and misniformation to find out what, exactly, is happening over there.
