Treliving on the FAN
- Busy day.
- Didn't cast a wide net.
- Done our work, limited number of players that fit.
- Michael Frolik was the guy for us.
- Got him, so that's good!
- Looks at all sorts of options for goaltending.
- Very stable in goal.
- Adding Grant gives depth.
- Wanted to give Max Reinhart an opportunity.
- Micheal was main target because of the fit. Looking organizationally to strengthen RW position. Frolik shoots left but RW is his natural position.
- Frolik is a line fixer. Coaches use him to fix lines.
- Plays with tremendous intelligence. Able to play with top players or in a checking role. Plays in the guts of the game. Plays in the areas and does the heavy lifting to help you win games.
- Frolik can play anywhere in top 9.
- Treliving watched almost every shift Frolik played this year.
- Frolik cleans up messes.
- Not expecting him to score 30, but can be an important player.
- Still trying to "get your hands around" the whole courting thing with free agency.
- Want to find out what's important to the player.
- Met with Frolik in Florida.
- Talked with him about how he fits and what role they see him fulfilling.
- All about education - teaching the player what they want him to do.
- Don't want the player to be surprised by how he's used.
- Frolik talked with Bob Hartley at length.
- Very popular player, lots of teams in on him.
- Flames were prepared to walk away. Got it done for something they could handle.
- Interesting goalie market.
- Lots of talks with Karri and his agent.
- Stayed in regular communication.
- Both agreed it would be good to get into the courting period and see what's out there.
- Karri had multiple opportunities including multi-year contracts.
- Karri is comfortable here and Flames are comfortable with him.
- 1 year deal gives a lot of flexibility.
- Long time until training camp.
- Goaltending is an area that is very critical.
- Can try to fix your team in a ton of areas but won't win with average goaltending.
- Will go to October and see what happens.
- Brad much more comfortable now.
- Need three guys. Needed 3 last year.
- Got three good ones right now.
- All goalies now in the last year of their contract.
- Max has been a good soldier. Max saw some people come up and play... eager for an opportunity if there was one elsewhere.
- Flames qualified him to keep his rights.
- Looked for opportunities in other organizations.
- Bennett and Ferland made it difficult for Reinhart.
- Max eager for fresh start with Nashville.
- Some conditions must be met in order for Flames to get the 4th round pick.
- Got asset and freed up contract.
- Hunter Smith turning pro.
- Austin Carroll notable.
- Turner Elson came out of nowhere and impressed
- Markus Granlund impressed
- Derek Grant targeted by Flames scouts. Flames like his game.
- Big body, can do lots of things. Can play all forward positions.
- Doesn't run people over but leans on people and can shield the puck well.
- Need to find NHL players elsewhere.
- Can never have too many good players.
- Lots of depth.
- Get better by amassing depth.
- Saw it last year. We got a bunch of injuries a couple weeks into the season. Opened up tons of opportunity.
- Competition is what we're going to do here. Create competition internally.
- Lots of depth opens up other opportunities.
- Adding Frolik might displace other things but we like adding good players.
- Always feel good when your team is getting better.
- Lots of work to do but going well.
- Taking steps in the right direction.
- Some contracts that need to be done.
- In August Brad *might* take a vacation.
- West is getting better.
- Edmonton is better.
- Don't see a lot of really big deals.
- Kessel was a big deal.
- Anaheim, Colorado, LA getting better.
Done.

Awesome write-up. Big thanks!
Curious about something. Was exactly does it mean that "coaches use him (frolik) to fix lines?" He makes other players better? He can adopt his style to play with anyone? What?

Yeah, the implication is that he has been used to make under-performing lines better.
Brad was clear that Frolik is incredibly adaptable and can play anywhere in the lineup and help at that spot.

I like this. That line would be absolute hell to play against. They would have the puck the whole time... and when they didn't Ferland would smash and get it back.

Random thought but from everything I've read about Frolik lately he sounds like what we hope Klimchuk will be. Can play anywhere in the top 9 and does the little things needed to win.
