Default GAME 2: Nik Lewis and the Als vs CALGARY

Game Time: Friday, July 3rd at 5:30pm MDT at Percival Molson Stadium
Televised: TSN, ESPN2

This is the first game the Stamps will face Nik Lewis, fan favorite during his time with Calgary. Montreal lost their first home game last week and they also lost both QB Jonathan Crompton and Dan LeFevour to shoulder injury. Rookie Canadian QB Brandon Bridge ended up finishing the game and he didn't look that bad. He was actually playing well before he threw that interception. Bridges will start as a QB on Friday and another rookie Rakeem Cato will back him up. On paper, it looks like this is going to be a slim-picking for the Stamps but I don't think the team will treat it that way. Remember last season, they lost 31-15 to Montreal at Molson Stadium with a new starting QB Crompton on the helm.

OFFENSE:

QB Bo Levi Mitchell played well enough to win but he made some mistakes throwing some interceptions. Drew Tate got stopped on 2 third down gamble one that almost cost them the game.
R Jeff Fuller had an awesome game with 9 catches for 148 yards. I believed he had at least a couple of outstanding catches and one late in the game that gave K Rene Paredes a good distance for field goal attempt. It would have been a better distance if it wasn't for that questionable objectionable conduct penalty. Jeff Fuller won the Top Performer in the CFL for Week 1. R Rogers was also good and caught the ball 5 times for 62 yards with 1 TD. Offensive Linemen was okay but they need to give Mitchell some time to throw. The OLine gave up a few QB sacks last week but I am sure they will improve this week.

DEFENSE:

The Sackmaster is back!! DE Charleston Hughes had an outstanding game. He was all over Collaros even though he was being double-teamed again. Hughes ended up with 2 sacks, 4 tackles and 2 knockdowns. The dependable Keon Raymond did it again. It seems like everytime he gets the interception he goes for a Pick-6. Keon scored a 98-yard interception touchdown late in the game and it was a perfect timing too. MLB Juwan Simpson was having a great first half until he got injured in the 3rd quarter. Looks like he will miss the game on Friday with minor leg injury. Glenn Love and Jesper Simmons will take his place as a MLB if he can't play.

SPECIAL TEAM:

Overall, they were good but they did surrendered a punt return TD to Speedy Banks. Blocking was okay and I am sure any time now Tim Brown will return a punt or kickoff all the way to the end zone with the help of some good blocking. Punter Rob Maver averaged for 56 yards in 5 punts. His longest punt was for 83 yards. K Rene Paredes only kicked one field goal but it was the most important play in the game. Paredes was good on a 50-yards field goal attempt for the win.

OPPONENTS:

Strange to see a couple of prominent receivers who both played for Alberta teams for the long time wearing a Montreal Alouettes uniform. It is even strange to see #8 instead of seeing #82 on the field. Both Nik Lewis and Fred Stamps are playing their first season as the Als.

************************************************** **
I am wondering what will happen to those players on a one-game injury list like DE Brandon Boudreaux, R Kamer Jorden, OL Karl Lavoie, DT Corey Mace, LS Tim St.Pierre and DL Shomari Williams. They already missed one game so Huf will have to make some adjustment in the lineup I guess.

GO STAMPS GO!!!

Nik Lewis and Shawn Lemon seems to be having fun teasing Charleston Hughes. I can't wait to see Hughes tweets to Nik and Lemon.

Nik Lewis tweeted :

@nikel18: the face @StampMachine makes when his soul exits his body tomorrow. @SLemonator. ⬆⬆⬆⬆

Shawn Lemon tweeted :

@SLemonator: I honestly I think @StampMachine is scared of @nikel18 just my humble opinion tho

Kind of dissapointed QB Brandon Bridge will not start for the Als tonight. Hoping to see the first Canadian QB to start in the CFL for a very long time. Higgins is starting Rakeem Cato. Just don't make any sense to me. Bridge won the 3rd stringer and he even played last week. Cato wasn't even in the lineup last week.

DE Brandon Boudreaux and R Jeff Fuller will not play tonight.

Good stuff.
Sitting beside Paredes' family, on a perfect night for football.

I've read a few places that Cato is the better passer, but I was equally hoping that Bridge would start

Damn Cato was 7 for 7 with TD so far. Nik Lewis is so pumped up with a couple of nice blocks and a catch. Stamps missed Juwan Simpson so far as Glenn Love couldn't stop anything in his place. I hope he makes some adjustment in the next series.

That is a PI. DB is not looking at the ball and he touched Rogers before the ball comes in.

It is not that the offense is not playing well tonight. They are just making too many mistakes. Cunningham missing the ball, Cunningham again slowing down, Spencer Wilson hand in the face penalty after Rogers excellent pass. Edwin Harrison missing blocks a couple of times that ended up Mitchell getting sacked.

At least defense is starting to play better. Special team on the other hand..more penalties.

OL not looking good.
Too many penalties.
Joe West is no good.
No running game at all.

Hopefully Huff can make 2nd half adjustments.

Nik Lewis could easily become a fan favourite in Montreal the way he became fan favourite here in Calgary.
