I would never condone violence towards a child, but we are giants to them. If your kid is small enough that they need to be in a car seat, you can physically stuff them in that car seat.
I used to do handstands on the back seat of the car growing up, or I would lie across the back window.
The box isn't that big a deal. If the dad wasn't speeding it would have been a fun trip.

Who remembers the Mini-Toppers in the 80s that went about 1/4 way down the box and opened from the trucks back window? My neighbors had one of those and that's where the kids rode in the truck. I am not even sure how well it was secured to the truck bed.

Sure some parents try to reduce the risk to their children as much as possible to help ensure their safety and some rely on luck. Everyone has their own strategies and priorities.
We joke about this being a terrible parent, when in reality, many of us were handled the same in vahicles when we were children.
Nope.
If it were me, or my kid, the very first time something like that was pulled, there would be no chance of being able to sit in the car seat because the ass would be blistered by the parent.

Man I remember just riding in the bed of the truck, no topper, no nothing. I can remember going around corners and all the kids rolling across the bed of the truck and smashing into each other as a game.

The fact that the child made the decision is the worst part of the story. Children shouldn't get the choice. It's something my husband and I have fought over in regards to his daughter as well.... she starts up with the waterworks and he puts her in the front seat. Ummmm, first, it's illegal. Second, it's unsafe. Third, you're giving in to a child! Way to set boundaries!
However, I remember being a kid with no seatbelts, crawling all over vehicles, etc. Those were the good ol' days.

Yeah. My "child seat" was the armrest that folded down between the seats. The "seatbelt" was my dad's arm pressing against my chest if he had to break hard.
Obviously the way we do it now is better, but it's crazy to think of how unsafe "normal" was.

My wife teaches the St. John car seat course. As part of her certification they review accidents and what happens to unsecured children and also what happens with improperly installed car seats.
After seeing that I guarantee you will triple check your seat installation and never go anywhere without your kids properly strapped in.
