There's no doubt that Americans are bigger today than they were in the 1960s. But Christopher Ingraham at the Washington Post pulled out some staggering stats to demonstrate exactly how big Americans have become: the average woman today weighs 166.2 pounds — which is almost the exact same amount as the average American man in the early 1960s.

"At 195.5 pounds, put five American guys in a room and you've gathered roughly half a ton of manhood," Ingraham notes. In the same period, women's weight shot up from 140 pounds to just over 166 pounds — an 18.5 percent increase.

The article seems to go for some shock value by focussing on women when they could have focused on men or just the fat population in general.
What is shocking is how fat we are getting. Canadians used to be able to laugh at fat Americans but the numbers for Canada aren't much better when ever any Canadian reports come out. In reality you don't need numbers, you can just look at all the fat people out and about.
Were on the verge of a health care crisis. And airline seats are getting smaller. Ugh!

Women are much taller too. So the 140lbs woman was probably 5'4"? and now 166lbs is 5'6"?

I grew up on the other side of the pond. In my 25 years there, I can count on one hand the number of 300lb people I've ever seen there. It amazed me when I moved over here. You could spend an hour in any food court and find just as many obese people. And I'm talking about the people who have ankles bigger than my thighs. That kind of obese.
In my office alone, there are at least three huge women who huff and puff when they walk and have bellies close to their knees. Then just in the immediate vicinity of my desk there are three young women in their 20's who are around the 200lb mark. I'm not picking on women at all, just that there aren't too many truly big guys at my office.

Even if there's merit in that it would equate to 13 lbs per inch which is a lot. A 5'6" 166 lb woman is pretty plump and that's just the average woman now in the US.
