Default Smid assigned to Stockton on conditioning stint UPD: Recalled on Nov 27.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
The #Flames have assigned Ladislav Smid to Stockton on a conditioning assignment. He will play for the Heat tomorrow.

I thought you had to be coming back from injury to qualify for conditioning stint? He has been back a while and has played a couple of games.

Default Smid assigned to Stockton on conditioning stint

What's the eligibility for this? You would think they would have sent Ortio for this as well. Unless they intend playing him Friday

Smid still occupies a roster space during conditioning stint. And the flames are either in, or close to California, that if an injury happened they could get him hack really quickly.

Yeah this is a bit suspicious, he's played games already. I'm sure it is all legit but it does seem fishy.

Technically you don't have to be injured to be sent on a conditioning stint. A player just has to agree to it

If the league determines you are using a conditioning stint to evade waivers or circumvent another CBA provision, they can take action and punish a team.

A conditioning stint like this can only be for a maximum of 14 consecutive days.

I don't think it's suspicious, I think it's a good opportunity with the flames being in California. Might have been done a few days ago if Russell hadn't got hurt.

Apparently not as Duhatschek was saying on the Fan 960 today that the Flames might ask Ortio to go down to Stockton for a couple of weeks on a conditioning stint - apparently all that is needed is the agreement of the player.

I guess that's why they never tried it with Ortio. If there ever was a team that could send 4-5 players down on conditioning stint , this years flames are the one.

It's not suspicious because the Flames would hope Smid would be claimed on waivers.

interesting to see how many games he will play in Stockton.

Stockton plays an away game @ Ontario tomorrow (which is right next to LA)
Stockton plays a home game vs Bakersfield on Friday (Flames will be nearby for Saturday's game vs San Jose)
Stockton plays an away game @ Bakersfield on Saturday.

Then Stockton doesn't play again until Dec 4.

No concipiracy here. Smid hasn't played much since returning and he needs to play. They are near Stockton so getting him out of the press box and into some games makes sense.

I kind of hate that he was sent on a conditioning stint, because now the conditioning stint will be brought up for the next two years as a valid roster move that will solve all our roster problems even though it is seldom ever used.

But, but...conditioning stint?

Sigh.

It should've been done the day he was declared healthy. Would've been better to gauge where his game was at. That or outright waived in favor of a Schlemko, Ryan Wilson, even Diaz as a better option, but it's bad optics to have 3.5 mil sitting in the minors

Smid seems like a good guy and maybe he would rather play there if he's not going to get in the lineup any time soon.

It's not like this is a first for the Flames.

It doesn't solve any roster problems. He still counts against the 23 man roster and his cap hit still counts in full while he's in Stockton. From the CBA's POV, he's still in the NHL.

I understand that, I just meant others wouldn't know that or forget it and continue to bring it up time after time after time.

This also gives the team a chance to see Smid side-by-side with defensemen who should be knocking on the door to take his job. A three game sample size is ultimately meaningless, but I really hope we have at least two guys who look head and shoulders above Smid.
