Default The Keg downtown is closing (Correction- Beltline; not downtown)

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...sing-1.3171129

Quote:
A spokesperson for The Keg says it is closing its Mount Royal location after 42 years to push business to a newer location in Mission.

However, Hurtubise says there are many factors affecting the city's restaurant businesses right now.

"The foreign worker programs have been taken away, so that's tough. Minimum wage, the dollar, commodity prices are out of control. It's a whole pile of things."

"Il Sogno. Closed. Brava Bistro...closed. Black Betty...closed. People are just re-evaluating if it makes sense to push this thing or throw in the towel."

The Mount Royal Keg officially closes its doors on Aug. 8. Many former staff from across the country are coming out for the restaurant's final night.

I'd wager it has a lot more to do with the astronomical rents in those locations than the Foreign Worker program.

Now where are people in the core going to get their overpriced, sub-par steaks, seasoned with Safeway brand steak spice?

Sounds like it's moving locations from Beltline to Mission. More of relocation than closing.

Pretty sure Il Sogno closed because they couldn't come to an agreement on renewal of their space with the building owner.

What The Keg tries to sell as steak is a crime against humanity.

Interesting - I know a couple of people who work there. Wonder when the one in Mission will open up?

There are many steak houses in downtown, they won't be missed. That's probably why they are closing.

Come on. It's not that bad. What's with the over the top exaggeration we see so much of these days on the internet? Sure there are better steaks to be had but it's not like they are serving horse meat. Complaining about price is like complaining about being overcharged for a highball at a restaurant. All steaks are overpriced regardless of the establishment.

I've tried to go back to this Keg multiple times. I know it's the same menu as other ones, and should be an identical experience... but the food there was just always really under par. That's just a lunch point of view, maybe it was better at dinner...

Not surprised to see it's closing, only surprised it took this long really.

Also one on 11th ave.

The Keg does a consistently good job on Prime Rib. I will always order that over steak.

^^ I think the one on 11th Ave is the one that is closing down.

CBC should learn the difference between the beltline and Mount Royal.

I can't really say I get this:

"The Mount Royal Keg officially closes its doors on Aug. 8. Many former staff from across the country are coming out for the restaurant's final night."

When the Consumers Distributing that I used to work at in Winnipeg closed, I felt nothing absolutly emotionally flatlined - but then again, maybe I am emotionally dead........

The Keg should. It's officially designated as the Mount Royal Keg.

This has finally cleared up something that has confused me for years (but not enough for me to actually look into it). I've heard people make reference to the "Mount Royal Keg" many times and I could never figure out what they were talking about. Was there a Keg somewhere on 17th Ave that I didn't know about? Was there one near the College? Nope. Apparently, 11th Ave is close enough.

People care about The Keg?

I never had issues with steak prices at The Keg based on the cut. I stopped going because they didn't appear to employ many people that knew how to cook their own steaks to medium rare. I don't mind a steak being overdone occasionally but in my experience they weren't even batting .500. When Alloy & The Nash are nailing it, and only marginally more expensive, there was no reason to go to The Keg any longer.
