Icon48 NHL will go to 5 minute 3-on-3 OT for regular season (no more 4-on-4)

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Pending B of G approval, NHL will go to 3-on-3 overtime for 5 minutes in regular season games next season.

This is different than the AHL format that was 4on4 for 4 minutes followed by 3 on 3 for 3 minutes.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
For those asking, no 4-on-4 OT at all. Right to 3-on-3. 5 minutes sudden death. No goal, it goes to shootout.

Awesome!

So does this mean 5 minutes of 4 on 4 OT followed by 5 minutes of 3 on 3 OT?

Or is it just straight 3 on 3 for 5 minutes? I'm assuming option 1.

Straight 3 on 3 is my understanding.

The NHLPA wanted just 5 minutes of 3 on 3.

NHL wanted 4 minutes of 4 on 4 followed by 3 minutes of 3 on 3.

Nice! 3 on 3 is exciting hockey, and surely it will severely limit the amount of shootouts we see.

Yikes, this isn't the adjustment I was hoping for. I was hoping 4 on 4 then 3 on 3.

3 on 3 and then off to a shootout is keeping one gimmick while adding something only slightly less gimmicky.

Oh wow. I was assuming 5 minutes 4 on 4 and then if needed 5 minutes of 3 on 3.

3 on 3 will be so exciting.

Hopefully. I think it will be exciting to watch. Still not my definition of team hockey, personally, but still can't wait to see how it looks.

A whole bunch of meh.. I'm not a super fan of 4v4 much either. How can they make this change and not make a regulation win worth 3pts, OT win worth 2, and a OT loss 1pt??

Very few games will reach the shootout now anyway.

Anything that kills the shootout is positive.

Maybe not so awesome if they're just going straight to 3 on 3. It should be 4 on 4, then 3 on 3.

for 5 minutes I'd much rather watch exciting, creative hockey then team hockey. It's a win-win in my books

I would have preferred to keep the 4 on 4 and then add in 5 minutes of 3 on 3. That would only have been a few extra shifts for each player anyways (2-3).

I agree they should change the point system as there is no incentive to win in regulation but they won't as they like close playoff races with lots of teams involved
It's a shame

What happens if there is a penalty? 3 on 2? that would be ridiculous.
