Left Lane Ticketing
So I read/saw a report about how BC is going to be ticketing left lane 'hogs' - see link.
That's not my point so much though. In discussion this morning, someone says that this is going to be happening in Calgary, specifically the Deerfoot. I googled (not terribly hard though) to try and find it, as a couple of people were insistent that they'd seen it in print, and possibly a report on Global.
Has anyone else seen something on this? Heard a news report? I can't fathom how it would be enforceable, particularly on the Deerfoot, but I suppose if they can do it, they will.
There was also argument over whether or not the far left lane is technically a 'fast lane/passing lane' as opposed to just being a lane. Anyway, I'm more interested in hearing if anyone else has heard this ticketing thing regarding left lane ticketing in Calgary/on the Deerfoot.

I saw it on FB in a Global News article not long ago.
I also noticed they added more "Slower Traffic Keep Right" Signs on Deerfoot.

It's slow at Deerfoot during rush hour so what's the point?

There was a thread floating around about it somewhere. Might have been in the auto or GMG thread too.

This is a hollow threat, while I like it, I can't see it being enforced on a mass scale.
In short, much like, drinking & driving, texting & driving it won't stop strugglers driving in the left lane.

I agree.
Basically the mandate would have to be that left lane stragglers are a bigger priority than speeders and I can't see that happening here.

I should clarify, I suppose - the argument was whether it's considered a fast/passing lane, inside city limits, or just another lane.
I did a search for the info regarding enforcing it within Calgary but only found the same article about BC. I don't seem to find anything anywhere, about Calgary.

Obstructing the safe flow of traffic has always been illegal, but I haven't heard anything new about actually enforcing it here

$167 fine and 3 demerits in BC now for drivers who "don't use the left lane for either passing, allowing traffic to merge or preparing for a turn."
Presumably there has been discussion but nothing officially stating that they are considering this for Alberta. Seems easily enforceable to me. There's allowances based on heavy volume as well, a "Deerfoot clause" we could call it.

I'll add that when I read about BC's new law I don't think of what it'd do for Deerfoot. I think of Stoney, Henday, QE2, highway 4, highway 43... roads where this legislation would actually be of value in terms of increasing safety allowing for higher speed limits, which is what BC has done.
Deerfoot is too crappy a road and built to standards too poor to ever really hope for them to raise the limit anyway, so this law would have only marginal benefit if strictly enforced on Deerfoot especially because of the high volume.

Yeah when I think of this law I think of it benefitting highways outside of the city limits. Deerfoot is ####ed regardless

It's considered a passing lane. There is no such thing as a "fast" lane. Going faster than the posted limit in any lane can get you a speeding ticket.

BC law is applicable to any road with a limit higher than 80, inside or outside of city limits doesn't matter as far I know.

If Deerfoot actually had a right hand thru lane this would be enforceable.

Agree, when traffic is flowing along and someone is doing 80 there, that is a lot more dangerous than someone in the fast lane at 120.

Maybe a place to start would be no 18-wheelers in the left lane on higher speed roads. Nothing better than two big rigs turtle racing side by side in the left and middle lanes to screw up traffic, whether on Deerfoot (when it is flowing) or on highways out of town.

Absolutly. In Germany and Italy, traffic flows sooo much better. Trucks in Italy basically took the right lane, bumper to bumper. It was 3 lane highway, so the other 2 lanes were flowing fast. Plus no one sits in the leftmost lane, it is passing only.
Truck drivers here are horrible. They need rules, because they don't believe in common courtesy.

I absolutely lose my mind when there is a semi in the Left lane and it's pretty much daily. Not only cause they can't do the speed limit through turns but also cause they spray rocks every where because of their in ability to stay within the lines when they try to go fast through those turns.
####ing complete ####ing #######s that need to be sold to ISIS for target practice.
