Sir David Attenborough turned 90 today and for my money is easily, easily the greatest person in our world right now. It genuinely makes me sad to think one day he'll no longer be around!
Who would you put forward as your favourite (well known) human alive today?

I was going to come in here with a snarky "thank you, thank you!" but since you through out David A, I'm gonna have to agree. For now. You may have to add a poll to this thread after a few contenders come out.
Honest question: why do you think he's the greatest person alive? I only know him from narrating the Planet Earth and other documentaries. What else has he done?

Yeah, I had (ignorantly, I guess) never heard of him, and admittedly was expecting a little more for "greatest human ever". It seems he's a legendary broadcaster and narrator, and known as a national treasure in the UK. He was also named one of 100 Greatest Britons.
Cameron Swift, are you by chance British? Maybe that has something to do with it. No matter where he fits on the "greatest humans" list he seems like a hell of an accomplished broadcaster.

He's a little bit more then just a broadcaster. He's what David Suzuki could have been to Canada had he not turned into a narcissistic little twat.
Plus he's right up there with Morgan Freeman for the most awesome/recognizable voice. Even if you don't know it, you've heard him before.

What are the qualifications? The only name that comes to mind of someone who personified greatness would be Gandhi but I don't know of anyone in the same league. Aung San Suu Kyi?

Oh for sure, I've even done some more reading since posting that and yeah he's one hell of a human being. Cameron Swift didn't put him up as an amazing human being though, he put him up as the greatest human being alive, which is I guess why I was prepared for more.

Yeah, greatest human being alive is a weird one, isn't it? The social media age has geared us towards picking our favorite/best in list format, and has also caused us to want to pick our favorite/best in short order with relatively little thought, such is the beauty (sarcasm) of social media.
This is certainly a tough one and something that would be really neat to maybe attempt to work through here on CP. Should we start a thread and maybe discuss the admittedly difficult criteria to work through in coming up with a poll?
I think I'd personally be biased towards scientific achievement and philanthropy. But even knowing my bias I still go back and forth on philanthropy as it's limited to those with huge statements. Which isn't to discount what any of them do, and obviously you can make the argument that any number of "great/successful" human beings have benefited from opportunity/money.
But sometimes I see philanthropists held up so high and think "yes, they're amazing for donating so much time and money but give a group of ten people a bank account with $10 billion in it and I'm willing to bet 4-5 out of those ten take their new found money and time and turn into incredible philanthropists".
I guess I wasn't looking for a serious, well thought out discussion on who the greatest human alive is. It was intended more as a fun thread about your favourite people in this world.
With that in mind, I've edited the title.
