Default Insured Retirement Program - Financial Advisors

Hey All,

Wanting to get more information from you finance guys regarding something I recently came across.

I met a friend about a week ago and he mentioned this great opportunity to make money. It was something regarding an Insured Retirement Program - IRP. He mentioned how you can make a crazy amount of commission selling this type of insurance that is extremely more beneficial to the consumer than the traditional TFSA, RRSP route. You can take a quick 3 day course and become certified to sell this product through a company called "Gateway Financial". Seems almost Scamish, but of course the stuff he was feeding me sounded actually true.

Wondering if anyone has more insight, or personal experience on this?

Lets see...

Little training
Huge commissions
Better than TFSA or RRSP

Yep, seem legit.

Well the IRP is basically a specific way to use a whole life, life insurance policy. You overfund the policy which creates a cash value and that cash value grows over the years. When you retire you borrow money each year against the value and because it's borrowed money there is no tax.

It's not that this is a scam (although I don't have about this Gateway company you mention at all), and this strategy has been around for many years. It probably sounds a lot easier than it is. For example, to do this properly people have to not only have a fair amount of money, they have to want to spend it on insurance. They also have to want to commit that money, essentially for sure, to their retirement and do so years ahead of time. So for a guy who is say 30, they have to put away roughly $1000/month to make the numbers attractive. It's not that it can't be done, but there are only so many people willing.

It's hard to say that this is better than an RRSP or TFSA though. The illustrations may look more attractive, but there are a lot of considerations. Purely compensation wise it's a lot better for the advisor's though!

I forgot to mention that you would need to be life licensed to sell the product. That's more than three days, and while it's not nuclear physics, there's a lot to know. Perhaps this company is basically going to collect referrals and pay a fee or something so all these people aren't actually going to get licensed? I'm not sure about that pattern because like I say I've never heard of that company before.

Thanks for the info Slava. Yeah my guess is that its about referrals as well. The course is 400$ so I'm thinking its for knowledge as opposed to actually having a license. Also its a big money maker for the company. Sounds like a more sophisticated Amway as it uses $ as opposed to products. But who knows it seems to be working for my buddy.
