Internet Trolls, Financed by Russia?

A great article from the NYT on how that annoying poster that makes no sense on an internet forum might actually be part of an organized Russian operation....

HOWEVER....The most interesting point in the article might have inadvertently exposed their most dangerous troll. After careful study...I have to out our very own Rooskie mole on CP... Bill Bumface consider yourself outed!

One account was called “I Am Ass.” Ass had a Twitter account, an Instagram account, multiple Facebook accounts and his own website. In his avatars, Ass was depicted as a pair of cartoon buttocks with an ugly, smirking face.

Let the mass outings of CP users commence.

I've seen this quite a bit online, any youtube videos or news articles critical of Russia end up with a lot of pro Russian trolls.

I am 100% convinced that most countries are doing this or something similar. Majority of younger people don't talk to each other anymore, they stare at their phones and read tweets, FB, Instagramm, snapchats etc. Ideology used to reach people through newspapers, TV and radio. Nowadays, it's social media. Public opinion matters, so ideology is just changing tools of the trade. Russia is doing it. US is doing it...

Should we assume that <forgot the name of the guy> is a Wildrose Alliance sponsored troll, Nage_Waza is an Israel-sponsored troll, _Q_ is a Palestinian-sponsored troll, Nehkara is an NDP-sponsored troll etc? I am only half-serious, of course. But making a "wow, OMG!" news out of Russian Government sponsored trolling is laughable.

All countries do this to some degree. Why wouldn't you?

You could argue that Russia is somewhat different in that they have a publicly funded news organization (Russia Today found at RT.com) that specifically provides news in a non-native language, English. It's really not that different than what the US does, but maybe on a bigger scale.
