Icon28 Detroit grants permission to Babcock to talk to other teams

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
DET has granted Mike Babcock permission to talk to other NHL teams. Window open til late May. Doesn't mean Babcock leaving DET, window open.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
That window opens at 12 noon ET today. So Babcock will gauge interest and then make a decision on his future.

They can say it does not mean mean he's leaving, but I think pretty much guarantees it.

hardest part of that negotiation is getting Hartley to share ice cream cake with Babcock

Before the window closes .... I predict Toronto will offer annual salary of
x = amount they would spend on players if there was no salary cap
- top of salary cap.

So when will the Babcock find the blank cheque from Toronto in his mail? Tuesday, Wednesday, something like that?

Why does he potentially want out of Detriot?...is it simply that they can't afford to pay him what he can get elsewhere?...if so, does Edmonton have deeper pockets where it makes sense he could end up there? Toronto makes more sense, I'd think.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Babcock is going to World Championships on Monday to see DET prospect Dylan Larkin but execs from other NHL clubs there, too. Here we go.

I would say that he should go to Toronto and create potential immortality. However I can't see Babcock as the kind of coach that wants to enter at the start of a rebuild.

I sort of hope Babcock goes to some mediocre or average team for big money, power etc. and underwhelms just to bust this myth of him being the greatest coach ever. Sort of like what happened to Burke in Toronto.

Philly are known for throwing ridiculous money around so I wouldn't be surprise if he signs there. Then there's Buffalo Sabres who needs to get their $h1t togethere and who could help them right coaching the team? Babcock can. In Toronto, the biggest thing Shanahan can offer is becoming a GM and HC plus of course tons of money. Edmonton can use the McDavid and big bucks to entice Babcock. Detroit is still in the running though. I think Babcock will think this hard and might wait until his contract ends to make the decisions. One thing for sure though, he will be the highest paid and overpriced head coach in the NHL soon.

Real reason Detroit is letting him talk to other teams. Trying to get an asset out of it.

Helene St. James @HeleneStJames
NHL teams would have to sign compensation letter to talk to Babcock. If hire him, would owe Wings draft pick.

Helene St. James @HeleneStJames
Wings GM Ken Holland says compensation draft pick for Mike Babcock would be at other team's choice - one time within frame of next 3 years.
