Default Iginla 7th All Time No Stanley Cup UFA July 1 2017

Only Ovechkin higher on list as active player (5th). (Source: Sportsnet)

Iggie would look great at RW for the Flames 2017-18 season if he is still healthy when we make a serious run at the Cup! 4th line with moments on PP and top lines if injuries. <2 million cap hit by then?

Lifting the Cup as a Flame would be so fitting before retirement!

I would be all over bringing him in as a bottom 6 player so he can retire in Calgary, hopefully with one more cup run.

That has to be every Flames fan dream? Gio/Monahan handing the cup to Iginla?

Iggy giving Johnny a piggyback while he holds the Conn Smythe over his head?

No thanks. Maybe as a coach after he's done playing.

Iginla will never be a player on the Flames again. It's amazing people can't let it go.

And he is a shell of his former self. Doesn't play our style, isn't quick enough.

The Flames have passed the days of Iginla and Kiprusoff. All those are great memories and I don't think any of us will forget what Iginla did for the Flames...but nothing about that plan makes sense anymore (Edit: at this moment it doesn't make sense).

The Flames play a style which is far different than Iginla's...one (currently) built on speed and quick attacks. Iginla, especially Iginla two years older than today, will barely make it out of the neutral zone by the time the line gets their shot. He also hasn't back checked hard enough or played physical enough in years to make his a viable 4th line player. He has morphed from the beloved power forward into a sniper, something that I think we should have expected given the common lifespan of power forwards.

Would it be a cool novelty? Of course. A younger me might be all over this idea. Heck, I was thinking that the Flames could haul around Fleury as a 14th forward for the home crowd appeal back in 2009. But I can't see it happening or even being likely since it doesn't satisfy the needs of the Flames who are not short of 4th line prospects and alternatives.

And this says nothing about Iginla either...I'm not even sure he wants to keep playing once his Avalanche contract is done.

The only thing I can think of right now would be giving him a one day pre-season contract so he can claim he retired a Flame.

People need to lighten up a little, this is just a cool fantasy for some fans and it would be nice to see. Iggy come back has nothing to do with the "iginla era" or anything. He would be a complimentary piece similar to what Brendan morrow is in Tampa right now.

It's not about people needing to "let it go"

k, the guy is still a 30 goal scorer. I understand the "Iggy Era" is finished, but if in 2 years time he still has the ability to score 25-30 goals, then hell yeah I want him on my team.

He will be acquired at the trade deadline in 2017, and retire after winning the Cup.

And your use of that word shows extreme ignorance.

Back on subject, I'd be ok with him coming back as a bottom 6 IF needed, and IF it didn't cost us much.
Would love to see him retire as a Flame.

If Iginla can still contribute in 2017, then sure why the hell not.

But these days, you need all your dressed players to be able to play a regular shift, when they don't have something to contribute, they stick out like a sore thumb and suddenly that line can no longer be played and you have to shorten your bench. Roster spots are a precious resource, not meant to be for someone retiring on the roster and looking to piggyback their way to a cup. I'm all for bringing in any player that can come in and contribute to a win, but no coach or GM in the right mind would bring in someone just for a feel good story swan song.

The more important question is:

Who's ready for Round 3 of the Olli Jokinen show?!?

Iginla not a team player is a surprising view...

Never heard an interview from him that disappointed me. Winning it for Iggie would be one more reason for the boys to dig down and get it done...

Gio is a better captain that is fair.

I'll take the 10-15 goals that Iggie would add on any line he plays.

Sign as a UFA and make it him earn a spot. That's all...

We will revisit in 2 years...

The only thing that I agree with is that he is not fast enough for our system at the moment.

Will we still be playing that way in 2-3 years time? Thats anyone's guess. But at the moment he isnt a fit.

Nothing against Iginla, but look at the hockey this team plays ever since he left. Any complaints?

That is fair, but would you argue that the Avalanche are that much slower than the current flames? Some of the players he has been playing with are quite speedy, and he seemed to do just fine IMO.

I don't watch the Avs very closely so I could also be completely wrong
